why do people that offer up reviews of movies they have seen always feel the need to describe the plot/story... ad nauseam.

Yeah, there is really no need to give us a book report...tell us what you liked and don't like about it, don't give a detailed synopsis

beauty and the beast (original) 7/10

Still the basic movie we all remember and liked or loved, but never noticed how sexist it is towards men. Gaston the hard working self made man is painted as a buffoon rapist, Belle is the girl who is just too good for everyone, and the Beast who was born into royalty and is a real ahole is loved and praised. Belle's father is also a failure buffoon who can't do anything right.

The lesson is all men are idiot rapists unless you are born into money, then you can do whatever you want.

Songs still pretty good.

I find this post-feminist critique of B and the B to be both perceptive and refreshing. Well done, pwns.

Mother and I are going back to watch movies we've either never seen (me) or forgot about and want to see again (Mother). Usually 1 a week. Past weeks have been Bridge over the River Kwai (loooong, unintentional comedy), Brooklyn (charming), Driving Miss Daisy (holds up!), Race (meh), The Departed (had to stop and explain what was happening multiple times, <<Goodfellas)

One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) was this week.
God damn what a cast. A whole lot of omg that guy!
Nicholson really was a talent. Epic magnetism.

Belle is hardly heroic or anything. She's just a pretty, sweet, good girl. She's the prize. It's hardly a feminist tale.

The class issue is interesting though. The father is like a bumbling peasant. Good natured, kind of pathetic, but he's cool because he knows his place. Gaston is the striving nouveaux riche. The Beast is an aristocrat. There's something like this in a lot of Shakespeare where there's criticism of aristocracy at the first look, but anyone who ends up acting noble, usually has noble blood. If this were Shakespeare, they would have discovered at the end that Belle's real parents were aristocrats. (Maybe they did. It's been a long time since I've seen it. )

While we're on the subject of Disney cartoons and feminism though I will offer my criticism of the oft repeated feminist criticism that it's misogynist that so many Disney villains are women. I think that happens in movies directed at very young children more because a powerful male villain is too scary for very young children. Many of the male villains in these cartoons are weak like in The Lion King and Aladdin.

Really liked Silence. I get that the length turned a low of viewers away, but the gorgeous visuals are worth the price of admission, as is the moral quandary at the heart of the film that left me a with much to think about.

I think Disney just follows the plot of the fairy tale source material. I'm not sure if there's any real effort to emphasize female villains.

Really liked it too. Some people didn't like the length, but for me the movie sped by.

I try to keep most of my crackpot ideas off the forum, but I left the theater convinced that Kichijiro was Drunken Jesus.

Wonder Woman. Feels like they just decided to copy one of the better entries in the Marvel franchise, Captain America: The First Avenger, in order to prop up the flagging DCU.

I think the sign of a good modern superhero movie is when the 3rd act is the weakest, and that was definitely the case with this movie.

Got my 6 laughs, it passed the Bechdel test and the missus liked it - what more can you ask for on a date night at the movies?

Baby Driver - fun heist movie with some great car chases. It's more down to earth than other Edgar Wright movies but still has the visual flair and humour you'd expect. The narrative and character's decisions do get a bit messy towards the end but those are minor quibbles. It's almost like a musical as there's barely a moment when a song isn't playing. All in all just great fun.

morgan
(the morgan project in german).
deep in the woods a few scientists are cloning and they are doing good. morgan is a female teenager/clone-droid. too bad a machine doesnt always run right.
a bit of a.i. meets species, a lot of thriller, a bit of a mess here and there, good enuff to be watched by this thread
a few very annoying scenes: if you can shoot somebody in a 2016 movie: effin do so, stop to hesitate!!
oh: directed by ridley scott jr.

Baby Driver - loved this one. question for the end:

Spoiler:
why did Kevin Spacey's character turn 'good,' so to speak?

Star Trek Into Darkness

This is pretty brain dead by Hollywood standards, even more so by Trek standards. Pretty much spent the first half an hour picking plot holes. Kinda sets the tone as it's low on plot.

But by far my biggest gripe is that it tries to be waaayy to referential to people who remember Trek of yesteryear. Now I don't mind the little things like the NX-01 model or Sulu alluding to "The Mudd Incident", but this could of been so much better if it wasn't trying to be a modern day Wrath of Khan without anything that made WoK such a great film.

Case in point: the Kirk/Spock warp core scene at the end. I was literally cringing. Just so badly awful. I mean, honestly, what the hell were they thinking?

I saw the trailer for Baby Driver a few months back and was blown away. I knew I had to see this movie and it did not disappoint. I loved it but I wished trailers wouldn't show so much of the movie.

I digress, to answer you here's my guess:

Spoiler:
Baby had been driving for Kevin Spacey's character for 10 years iirc (never the same exact group for a heist but always Baby and him involved),
and perhaps he doesn't have any children himself. So Baby was like a son to him and he deep down felt like a father to him. He also says "I was in love once" so he can relate to them and there was probably a soft spot for Baby all along. There's the classic line that Spacey has "That's my Baby" as well which shows how much he was a fan of him.

Baby Driver

Meh. Why is this getting such rapturous reviews? It's a fairly standard heist flick. Decent cast. Not nearly enough car chases for what I assumed was the whole premise for the movie. Music was decent...mostly. Jon Hamm as a bad guy was good. Lily James is astoundingly beautiful. The kid who plays Baby, however, is pretty much a blank. Nothing special there at all.

Pleasantly diverting movie at best.

I can't believe this movie or performance doesn't get talked about or brought up more.

On the rare chance you guys haven't seen Midnight Special I'd highly recommend it.

Maybe 1/4 good depending on which TakeMath formula they're using.

There's a not great but criminally underrated horror film from 2011 that was One Take, Silent House starring the brilliant Elizabeth Olsen.

People gave it a poor review because it's an English remake and people irrationally hate English remakes, or any remakes for that matter, with the fiery passion of 1000 burning suns. I'm convinced a good portion of remakes are done simply as a troll in order to Emperor's New Clothes the snobbier of the critics and audience.
