sexy beast is incredible, but wouldn't really consider it a comedy.
it has comedic moments but not really a comedy imo.

For the record, my gf past the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind test on one of our first dates (probably her favorite romantic movie and she loved The Fountain as well, end of brag), yet loves the light hearted side of typical American comedies...

And oh, thought of 2 solid light-hearted comedies as well : Antz and Human Nature. Impossible to find a lighter side to Woody Allen and Charlie Kaufman, me thinks...

Just saw A most violent year. Very good acting, plot was suspenseful, but not great imo. Basically if you liked Drive and The Counselor, then you'll probably like this.

All those came out in 1980? My goodness.

I watched the movie Airport 1975 or something like starring Charlton Heston, I believe it was the movie Airplane spoofed. After I realized that I couldn't take it seriously and would laugh.

thought "robot and frank" was pretty good.

Oh speaking of The Counselor, I watched the Director's Cut on the Blu-Ray. Definitely solid. I liked it better this time than the first time (theatrical edition), but I can't judge whether or not it's the supposedly improved "flow" and the added content of the DC or if it's just the fact that I'm seeing it for a second time (also have now read the screenplay).

The opening scene, I think, is much better in the DC due to it being longer and more graphic (it's a sex scene). It feels weird and stilted in the theatrical perhaps because it had to be edited for "R". This sets a tone for the whole movie. The super odd scene of Bardem telling the story about the car also seemed better/less weird in this version.

Yea the more I think about it the more I think the DC is definitely much improved.

Haven't seen it mentioned much in this thread, but Calvary is the best movie I've seen for 2014 (haven't seen the late releases). The two McDonagh brothers are building a great stable of movies (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, The Guard and now Calvary).

due to avg age of critic then I assume? I picture my dad and a "what is this crap" inability to appreciate drug references/"mindless" humor

Meh. The first two are pretty divisive and comedies tend to get marked down relative to dramas with critics as a rule.

Course not, that would be Le Chandail (The Sweater, for all you square heads.)

Watched The Heartbreak Kid last night on TCM. Dated and sort of bland. I enjoyed it more for who was in it. Almost everyone in it went on to sitcom fame. Maddie, Mrs. Roper, Raymond's mother and Oliver Wendell Douglas.

Cybil Shepherd was a stunning woman.

Seen it a few times, but Fruitvale Station kills me every time. Heartbreaking and painstakingly real. Michael B. Jordan is phenomenal.

Does KFH count as a romantic comedy?

I can see it... certainly shaolin soccer would be.

I watched it with my mother, she's never cried so hard during a movie. That was a tough watch.

Just watched The White Ribbon. I'm sure some in this thread, probably with more refined cinematic tastes and movie watching 'skills' than myself, would love it, and it's certainly highly acclaimed (Palm d'Or, Golden Globe, etc).

However, for me, it just felt like a dreary, albeit well shot, 2+ hours I'll never get back.

The White Ribbon is brilliant
01-31-2015 , 07:30 PM
Oh man The Judgewas far more depressing that I expected it to be.

And what exactly were you going to do with those two hours anyway?

Jerk off, maybe watch Transformers again, the usual...

I can see why people liked it and I thought the whole ambience of the film was really well done, just for a Saturday night movie it wasn't my cup of tea.

Ive seen a couple of Haneke's film and even though I find them nice and deep (I really like deep films), I can never rate them more than 6/10 (5 is an acceptable movie for me).

What you think it lies beyond the meaning of The White Ribbon? I read somewhere that that generation of kids is the one that will grow up to be the nazis and that might expalin the whole dark and spooky tone of the filme, but I guess there must be something deeper...
02-01-2015 , 01:37 AM
I dunno why people go bananas for Haneke. Seen a few of his movies and fail to see the appeal. I liked The White Ribbon, but I don't think I'd ever recommend it to anyone except for the B&W cinematography. White Ribbon lost the foreign language Oscar that year in a big "upset" to The Secret in Their Eyes, Argentinian film starring Ricardo Darin. Highly recommend that. That'd be a great Saturday night movie.

Speaking of that, Argentina has another film that could surprise in the foreign language race this year (where the dreary Ida & dreary Leviathan are heavy favorites) called Wild Tales, also starring Darin.

yeah I believe that is the underlying theme in the movie
