Caught a part of that terrible "Mission to Mars" film from like 15 years ago and was reminded of the always annoying cliche where a group of astronauts are in an alien area and one of them takes their helmet off. The others freak out and try to stop him, but they're too late. Of course, the air is completely breathable and the hero says something to the effect of, "Just as I thought..an atmosphere just like ours!" And then the rest remove their helmets. For once, I'd love to see the character remove his helmet and get his eyeballs sucked out of his head Total Recall style, with his final words being, "Why the **** did I do that? What a stupid way to go." as he chokes to death on his own blood.

One that successfully does the full inversion is Arthur.
I've got a real soft spot for sabrina.

Red Planet, another terrible Mars movie, does something similar. But, they ran out of oxygen in their suits so they figured it didn't really matter at the time I guess.

I do too; but it's for Audrey Hepburn's Sabrina.

Not really an inverted cliche. Hooker with a heart of gold is a really common archetype.

Scenes where millions of dollars of cash, for some reason on another, are scattered through the city during/at the culmination of a car chase or as the result of an explosion.

But they don't usually marry millionaires. And she was far from the hooker with a heart of gold archetype, she was just as emotionless a financial negotiator as he was. Until they fell in love

Prometheus did the same ****. The casualness with which space helmets are removed in films is really remarkable.

You don't seem to understand the archetype

No. But just for that, I'm going to beat you flat.

Explain to me what the archetype embodies.

Def. a movie/movie trailer cliche that has gained some noticeable traction over the past few years.

Most elite scientists in movies are portrayed fairly poorly, especially if they are not the main character.

Something I noticed today while watching an old movie:

Main character gets a drink (not paying for it, obv) and has a brief conversation with the bartender. He takes one sip, sets the drink on the bar, and walks away empty-handed.

Used far too often and in TV shows also:

A character who's given no indication of nefariousness asks "This invention/information you have brought me is earth-shattering. Who else have you told?"

The rest of the scene doesn't even have to be explained.

This was done really well in LA Confidential. In every other movie or TV show where this trope has been used, it has been done poorly and predictably.

I just saw world war z on tv. I thought the elite scientist was really well done.

Probably been mentioned but JFC in the movies knocking someone unconscious is ridiculously easy. Especially 80's movies.

In these times with so many movies using slowmotion / bullettime scenes, one thing that really bugs me isthe tendency / cliche that goes like this.....

Shot is fired, and as the bullit explosion move along, we see everything else move in slowmotion, yet evrything else is like 1/10 of normal time, while the bullit is 1/100 of normal time. How hard is it to understand relative speed.
