It's just the lead characters overwhelming need to be loved combined with his abject loneliness that does it.
Considering his age Haley Joel Osment absolutely nails it.
Yeah I agree with you, there is something about this film which is emotionally draining to me. I just can't watch it because I turn into an emotional wreck, I know it's not logical but the thought of this boy just wanting his mum, ok that's enough.

Maybe a weird choice for this thread, but Elephant.

I saw this movie in the cinema with a friend, when it ended we went to a nearby bar, ordered a beer, and then just sat there for an hour, neither of us saying a word.

Hard Target with Jean Claude Van Damme.

The part where the bad guys are hunting the homeless guy early on and the homeless guy starts begging for people on the street to help him. Everyone just ignores him because he's a bum. He's in middle of the street surrounded by people and sees that he can't escape the hunters. He spreads his arms out accepting the fact he's about to meet his maker. Then he gets lit up by bullets and falls down. Pretty powerful stuff.

this has got to be the cheesiest one yet - but here goes...

TERMINATOR 2 - the scene where he allows himself to be lowered into the molten metal, and you realize this machine has figured out what humanity is and makes a choice if you will to end it's existence to try to save it

or maybe I just liked killer robots - but I remember almost tearing up at the moment - that last thumbs up at the end just crushes me

Re: most emotionally devasting moment in film

Read half of page 2, so i'm grunching and don't know if anyone else has mentioned it but...

Lion King. When Mufasa gets trampled & Simba comes down and says "Dad? Dad. Come on. You gotta get up. We, we gotta go home." it's heartbreaking.

I watch it with my kids now & it makes me cry a bit harder.

also, to keep it along cartoon movie lines, Mars Needs Moms: I'll spoiler it cause I know you all LOVE your cartoon movies.

I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?
