Re: most emotionally devasting moment in film
Indeed. I think I mentioned it somewhere in this thread already.

Had to wait 160 posts for this. And it only has been mentioned once.
This had a huge impact on me when I was a kid, your dad dying (even thought it's a cartoon lion) seemed like the worst thing that could happen. This hurt me more than like bambi, because I looked up to my dad a lot (not that I didn't like my mom lol) and really thought he was like Mufasa (you know, I was a kid, boys look up to their dads like that). So seeing such a strong character die and poor simba saying ''dad, wake up'' had me in tears and with a lump in my chest for DAYS.

Re: most emotionally devasting moment in film
Forrest Gump, the part where Forrest is in the military hospital after being wounded and every letter he wrote to Jenny during his service gets tossed onto his bed, "return to sender." One of those scenes that seems to hit me harder than most people for some reason.
The Shawshank Redemption, after Andy loses his fight with the "sisters" and Captain Hadley takes it into his own hands to see it never happens again (beats one of the sisters near death and puts him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life). The emotions are a mixed bag for that scene because you're glad to see him beaten, but it also adds to the hopelessness of Andy's situation knowing Captain Hadley is just protecting his banker slave.

Re: most emotionally devasting moment in film
First post in the lounge.
Didn't see it mentioned ITT but when I was a kid the end of Return of the Jedi used to kill me.
Couple others:
Last half hour of Gandhi.
The end of Gladiator when Maximus is being carried out.
The end of Odd Man Out. Seems like James Mason was always going out in horribly tragic ways.
Speaking of which, the end of the old Disney 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
The end of Carlito's Way.
Someone mentioned it but the last montage in the Futurama episode when Fry chose not to clone his dog. Also the end of the one where he chooses not to steal the clover from his brother's grave as the Billy Idol song cues the end credits.

Re: most emotionally devasting moment in film
Just watched "On the Beach" for the first time. (where have I been?)
There's a scene where Perkins is trying to explain that when the time comes, his wife is gonna have to take herself and their baby out with pills. Intense.
I can't remember any details--probably because I have blocked them out- but I remember the end of "The English Patient" being especially brutal.

Blackhawk Down: Final scene, after the two snipers are gunned down defending the wounded ranger, the wounded ranger is overrun, beaten and dragged off. During the scene the camera pans out, all you see is the hand of the ranger grasping for the photo of his family.
Maybe it's my military background, but running out of ammo is a really, really sick feeling that Hollywood has never done any justice. There's nothing more "soul crushing" than being in a sustained fire-fight, only to steadily realize you're going to die regardless of what you do. And it's one thing to die, it's another to be left at the mercy of those who'd do far worse.

Re: most emotionally devasting moment in film
dont think you can speak of most devastating moment in film but what quite got me was the scene in American History X when Danny was killed and then Derek comes to the crime scene. Brother getting killed after what they have gone through = sick stuff

Re: most emotionally devasting moment in film
If anyone has seen Michael Haneke's " Code Unknown": The scene where the runaway son returns home and his father, who hasn't seen him in days, serves him dinner without saying a word, then goes into the bathroom, shuts the door, and runs the bath so his son won't hear him cry...that really gets to me.

blue velvet, when frank takes jeffrey and the isabella rosellini to his safehouse where he's keeping the kid and the husband....
the whole thing is so ridiculous, then the guy starts singing roy orbison, they let the lady see her husband but you can't see how fked up he is...
Ben: To your health, Frank.
Frank Booth: Ah, ****, let's drink to something else. Let's drink to ****ing. Yeah, say, "Here's to your ****, Frank."
Ben: If you like, Frank. Here's to your ****.
that whole scene to me is just over the top, insane, pure evil. and the fat chicks!!! WTF

Re: most emotionally devasting moment in film
I always get upset when watching Rocky IV and I see Apollo die because nobody would throw the towel (Apollo's orders).
Good movie and fun to watch but this scene always makes my stomach churn. It's like I don't know it's a movie. But then I remember he was in Happy Gilmore and I am OK again, but then I remember he dies in that, too.
No but seriously that is pretty devastating when Apollo dies. I'm not being facetious.

I totally understand that you're really upset by Apollo Creed's death, but your post still made me lol. Probably because of the Happy Gilmore part.
