Re: Modern horror movies thread

Saw a preview for the Darkness, a new wide release horror film. Looked promsing at least.

Checked rotten tomatoes, 0% fresh ratings.

Ugh.

I did see the Witch. It was good, but not great. Still a top 5-10% horror movie though imo.

Looking forward to Conjuring 2. If it gets dumpster ratings imma be pissed

Where the Devil Dwells (2014)
This is a smart and really quite decent indie horror set in 1989, regarding a paranoid schizophrenic son of a notorious serial killer, under ankle bracelet monitored house arrest, who may be menaced by a Satanic cult who worship his dead dad, or may be simply cracking up even more, due to his condition.
Any fan could do a lot worse than to check this one out.

+1 to Bone Tomahawk

This is a slow burner, and actually has less horror than it does Western, but I still think it qualifies for this thread. I would say that I didn't see this movie coming. While certain movies are purely there for shock value, this movie actually has some heart behind it, and characters we come to know quite well and form strong opinions about.

Hush (2016) (available on Netflix)

Made on a $70,000 budget, this movie got crazy strong reviews from a lot of people. In many ways this is a by-the-numbers home invasion suspense film, but it pulls of the execution commendably. I feel like it's overrated a bit, but I had good fun. Give it a B+, solid indie popcorn suspense movie.

Extinction http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3467412/?ref_=tt_rec_tti

Really good post-apocalyptic zombie drama. Three survivors, 2 men who hate each other,
one of whom has a 9yr old daughter, have to put their past behind them to protect the girl from a new strain of zombie. Slow paced and bleak but very watchable.
If you enjoyed Stake Land you should like this one as well.

Re: Modern horror movies thread

I'm just going to toss out a handful of the latest horror movies I've seen lately, with my rankings.

Hush - 5/10
Dead Snow 2 - 9
Absentia - 6
Behind the Mask: Rise of Leslie Vernon - 8
Session 9 - 8
Midnight Meat Train - 7
Triangle - 7
Housebound - 7
Pontypool - 7
Last Shift - 7
Midnight Movie - 6
It Follows - 4
The Babadook - 5

Also since I'm a huge Twilight Zone fan, what's everyone's favorite episodes?

Mine in no particular order:
- To Serve man
- A stop at Willoughby
- Eye of the beholder
- Nightmare at 20k feet
- Number 12 looks just like you

Re: Modern horror movies thread

Anybody listen to any good horror podcasts?

I downloaded and listened to the first 6 episodes of Small Town Horror on a drive at the weekend. It's done documentary-style with a guy recording his experiences as he goes back to his childhood hometown to confront the terrible things that happened to him. It's pretty good, with a reasonable storyline, and the main guy is good. It's just a shame that it's let down by the bit-part actors, most of which are awful.

Have also downloaded Knifepoint Horror which seems to be just a guy reading his own stories, but I haven't listened to a full episode yet.

Try United Nations of Horror if you want something about horror movies. I guest on it now and again.

^Yup dunno what that guy is complaining about. Horror is still strong.

You're absolutely crazy to give It Follows and The Babadook scores that low.

It Follows
4/10. Give me a fkn break. It was such a simple but effective idea for a horror, executed beautifully and well acted. What more could you want?

Just watched Green Room, didn't really like it that much. Surprised it has such a high rating on IMDB. Patrick Stewart's character was badass, but that was about all I liked.

I can't believe the bad reviews The Sacrament received. I thought it was an excellent film. I really enjoy this kind of film - slow paced, suspense, mysterious. I thought the cult figure was excellent as well.

I thought The Witch was very well made and interesting, but the ending kind of ruined it for me.

Re: Modern horror movies thread

Shark fan here so I saw The Shallows recently. Not a fan, like I'm pulling for the shark, more a fan of movies with sharks. This wasn't bad and had some relatively tense moments but it was no Jaws. Maybe 6/10 at best. I thought the reef was a more tense shark film with similar premise (shark eating people in ocean) but worth a watch.

Really? The ending just didn't ring true to me and made me dislike the main character.

Green Room was very good. I loved Saulnier's Blue Ruin and GR started slow but took off big time and never really let up. Violent and tense. 7/10
