Thanks for your compelling and above all else, interesting insights there snuffles, I've never once seen a person opine that those who like horror films harbour sick yaddayadda on a thread about horror films before, so you've given me much to um, ruminate on.

Hey have you seen this yet btw?

It's awesome

Witching and Bitching (2013)
Way entertaining action horror comedy from the always reliable Alex de Iglesia with a great pace to it.

Horror is horror, be it stately Gothics, psychological or pseudo snuff and torture porn is a boring meme coined by critic David Edelstein who doesn't particularly like violent horror and was using the term in a derogatory, morally superior sense, so nobody who is a horror fan really cares what he thinks, particularly as he's dumbing down potential discourse with inaccurate and dismissive terms, as I'd be if I were to term the likes of Airplane! as comedy porn or Rambo as war porn or The Lives of Others as highbrow chin stroking porn, for example. The first Saw is hardly gratuitous, yet he (and you apparently) labeled it as torture porn.

One of the reasons horror is popular is because of its versatility as it has a whole selection of subgenres. You want devil worshiping cults, then watch The Omen, you want ghost stories then watch The Innkeepers or The Shining, you want psychological than watch Spoorloos, and if you want gore, watch Day of the Dead and if you want what is referred to as "torture porn", then there's a whole selection to choose from too.

Scariness is subjective and people are individuals with individual tastes. I happen to like most subgenres of horror and most styles, be they PG-13 like The Others or NC17 like A Serbian Film.

No you merely think that
Quote:
People who watch torture porn over and over again are a different matter.
, while earlier you merely thought that people who watched Saw harboured sick fantasies and nobody rational is interested in your passing off of your personal opinion as a bare faced assertion with zero to back it up, as any self respecting horror fan can tell you, as we've heard it all before. Didn't phase us then and won't phase us now.
Your type of mentality leads to films being banned and creates silly and irrational eras such as the Video Nasty whingefest, as you just can't seem to grasp how some people are able to tell the difference between fiction and reality, enabling them to enjoy films like Saw, yet still be moral people who find real murder and violence repugnant.

Also, you claimed you didn't understand how adults can still like "horror" films anyway, so why are you even posting on this thread? I don't go on threads for people who collect rare 17th century coins and opine that I can't understand why any adult would collects such things, for example as I don't post on threads whose subjects don't interest me.
Odd that you do.

This does not include the adults who enjoy watching movies like Saw, of course. I think those people are literally ****ed in the head, and if I ever hear someone enjoys those kinds of movies, I make a mental note that they probably harbor some similar sick fantasies, and I stay as far away from them as I possibly can.
Gross generalizations and snap decisions on people you don't know belongs more in OOT than in the lounge. I love horror movies, and I even like torture porn (when it's done well). I'm 34 years old with a wife and 2 kids, and don't think I'm ****ed in the head. Please just stop posting in this thread, as we don't really need trolls here in the lounge. Thanks.

If you like torture porn when it's done well then you may wish to avoid The Human Centipede III and I Spit on Your Grave 2. Just a heads up.

There is something about human nature that is attracked to destruction and death.

People who watch horror movies to be scared are the reason why most of them are terrible (jumpscares..).
I found the genre of horror to be a great medium to portray profound human emotions like grief and despair (The Babadook, A Tale of Two Sisters and Silent Hill 2 are excellent examples)

However, I watched "Sinister" recently and it made me feel like a sadist watching all these little found footage snuff films..
Some sub-genres of horror movies are odd to me as well but they have a rightful place in the movie industry imo.

Have you seen Funny Games? That is a movie that basically scolds us for liking torture porn. It breaks down the 4th wall, and provides a torture pornesque movie without the actual porn, just the torture.

Did you see the 1997 original version or the 2007 English speaking remake?

Both. They are the same movie. I really can't distinguish one form the other, aside from the fact that I know the actors in the American version. Saw the original first if that makes any difference.

Not to me it doesn't, as you said they're the same film. I was just wondering if you'd seen both and was about to tell you that you weren't missing out, if you hadn't, as they're pretty much shot for shot.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)
A vampire stalks the dodgy residents of the semi ghost town of Bad City, Iran in this quirky horror-cum-modern-western that's US made and shot in California, but set in Iran and in Persian dialogue. Its rather stark black and white cinematography makes it all the more effective and it has a pretty cool soundtrack to boot. Recommended, and discoveries like these are why I'm still a horror fan.

Byzantium (2012)
Another offbeat take on the vampire subgenre, concerning two female vampires eking out an existence in a quiet coastal town, it's a nicely stylish horror and a pretty good film in its own right.

Killers (2014)
A Japanese serial killer who uploads his murders on the internet awakens dark urges in an Indonesian journalist who is following him online, in this decent offering from the Mo Brothers.

Modus Anomali (2012)

This was a fun watch; imagine a mashup of Dracula, Persepolis, and film noir with a spaghetti Western and 80's pop soundtrack. Winds up being a romantic drama than a horror flick, but not in a Twilighty kind of way.

Really good supernatural horror. Unusual story of a guy
who hooks up with a woman in Italy, only to find that she has
a dark secret. 7/10.

Watched the tunnel movie last night. I'm a big fan of found footage films, and as far as found footage goes this was a pretty good movie.

If you liked the tunnel movie some other found footage horror movies I would recommend are

As Above So Below
and
Grave Encounters 1 & 2

I liked all 3 of the above more than the tunnel movie.

Most found footage movies get rated pretty badly on movie rating sites though. Horror movies in general really

Some pretty good found footage I haven't seen mentioned:

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
The Possession of Michael King
Atticus Institute
The Poughskeepie Tapes
The Bay
Noroi: The Curse
Trollhunter

one that I haven't watched that I have been wanting to check out is "Unfriended". Kind of a different style of found footage but reviews seem pretty good

Just watched Unfriended. I would def. recommend it, if only because of how unique and modern the film is. It takes place entirely via a skype conversation. The only picture shown in the entire film is the main character's laptop screen.

I didn't like the ending too much. I think it would have been more powerful if:

Spoiler:
Instead of seeing the "ghost" of Laura at the end, after the laptop shuts we skip ahead and see a different LikeLeak video of Blaire killing herself from her own guilt, not because she was possessed or something. Really I would have liked anything than the movie showing us an actual ghost at the end, it felt so out of place and kind of against the vibe the movie was presenting. Could have just ended with the laptop shutting with nothing else being shown and I would have liked it more I think.

Good calls, I've seen those except Atticus Institute. I really liked Noroi and was pleasantly surprised with Michael King, it was a lot better than I was expecting.
You should check out Afflicted (2013), I linked a clip earlier itt, I reckon you'll dig it if you like found footage flicks, it's really quite good.
I'm currently attending a horror festival http://www.ifi.ie/horrorthon and a semi found footage film I caught last night was Jeruzalem (2015), in which two American tourists visiting the city get caught up in the Biblical Apocalypse. It's not great but it's entertaining at least and a passable way to spend 90 minutes, although it could have been really something. Still worth a look though if you've nothing better to watch.

A film I missed and was annoyed over was the Irish horror The Hallow (2015), as quite a few attendees were saying it was really good, so I'll be checking it out at some point.
