Been playing only for fun lately since I'm in grad school full time + plus working full time. I dropped down from 100NL to 25NL and then switched over to limit (my bread and butter) to put the "FUN" factor back in it while I crush the micros since that's all I play for now. Yeah...I'm done for the month.

when sb coldcaps preflop and checks the flop, i'd already begin thinking he has kings. then when he coldcalls two twice on the flop and check raises the turn, you should really stop raising.

The webs easiest free-roll is the 70 FPP satellites to the Sunday 100k.

This week, there are 18,000 players. I have to make 3000 to cash out. This tournament looses 2,000 players every ten minutes. I cashed last week.

First place is 18k. Wish me luck.

Finally back after a week in Vegas!
Had a training class during the day but the weekend and evening were filled with gloriously fun 2/4 limit Holdem at The Excalibur.
Played OK, Ran warm but not hot and ended up a little bit by the end of the week.

Two fun stories from the week.

I am playing in a game no my last morning there. The game has three local nits there who have been there every morning I can remember playing at Excalibur for the last few years. Anyway, The table is playing pretty tight and there is one guy there who is consistently stealing the little pots when no one who limps in bets the flop. He bets the turn every time trying to steal and most of the time it is working. One of the local nits ends up check raising him on the turn of a hand he is in and the stealer starts whining and groaning about being check raised. Still calls the local nit to the river and mucks his hand when he sees that Local nit actually has a hand(suprise, suprise). Two hands later I get AQs and I raise PF and still get like 6 callers. Whiner is on the button I am two to his right. Flop comes AQ rag (Yeah!). Everyone checks to the whiner/stealer and he bets. Everyone calls. (Yeah!) Turn comes up with another Ace. (Yeah) Everyone checks to the whiner and he bets out (Suprise suprise). A couple of people call, a couple fold and I call. River comes and I cannot remember exactly what it was but there was enough on the board to make a flush or straight possible. (Yeah!) Everyone checks to the whiner/stealer and he bets out. The couple of people still in call him and I check raise him. Oh the moaning and groaning was just wonderful! I told him that is sounded like he had so much fun with the last check raise that I just couldn't help but let him have some more fun. :-)

It's fun picking on people who whine too much!

The other interesting thing was that the Bad Beat Jackpot was hit while I was in town again. Last time I was in town it was hit at my table but I had gone for a walk and missed it(Yes, I realize it wouldn't have happened if I was at the table, it is just ironic). That was also the last time the jackpot was hit, I believe. So I am in town and it is hit again. Here are the funny parts, I was not playing that night because I had a buddy in town and he is not a Poker Player, so we were out doing other things. When it was hit a player at the table was gone to get some nachos or something and he Missed the jackpot (Yes, I know if he had been a the table it wouldn't have happened). The table actually realized this, felt sorry for him and did chip in to get him a small cut on their own. Damn no one felt that sorry for me when it happened to me! Anyway, the Jackpot was at $7777.75 and it was Aces full of 7's beaten by 4 7's.

Maybe when I am back in December the jackpot will be hit again and I will actually be at the table! :-)

All in all had a lot of fun, learned a lot, am glad to be back in Montana and sad to be back at work! Next trip in December with the WHOLE family. That will be interesting!

fish,

Good stuff.

I was recalling to someone yesterday that I used to do a lot of my online playing after drinking. Dunno, it seems to bring out the gamb00l in me. I remember a couple of years ago I entered a donkament, passed out in my chair, and woke up a few hours later to find out I finished third! Haha, everyone must have been on tilt having to wait for me to time out at the start of every hand.

So last night, standard home donkament. 9 people, one table. People playing like maniacs, half of them were smoking P.O.T., everyone but me was drinking as I am on the wagon. We were outside as the weather is perfect right now, but the only two non-smokers besides me busted out first and second, and I was an absolute smoke magnet for the rest of the night. I'm still coughing today. The P.O.T. comment was relevant as we weren't even making it a full orbit per blind increase as people were taking forever to make simple decisions.

I played maybe one hand in the first hour while the maniacs slugged it out. I didn't have any cards and watched the loose play with interest. Finally, down to ~5BB I pushed in EP with pocket sixes. My luck, I ran into tens and I think an A-10 or something ridiculous that shouldn't have called behind our raises. I spiked a six and tripled up. Within a couple of hands I had a massive chip lead.

So then I get to heads-up with a 3-1 chip advantage. He starts whittling away when he gets hit by the deck (tells are obvious, he never bluffs, and he overvalues aces regardless of how many players are in). We were almost dead even when I turned a straight with three clubs on the board. I pushed and he called with a wheel straight (holding A-2) and the nut flush draw. Naturally the fourth club came and I was on the rails. I made a small comeback until he rivered me again, this time a three-outer. So it goes. I made a good chunk of change at the expense of smelling like a friggin ashtray and scrubbing my face for fifteen minutes when I got home.

This was not a good story. But the thread needed a bump, so maybe people can share more interesting and hopefully shorter ones.

Hey all, if I can get through this week without breaking my computer or busting, I will be working on my Pooh-Bah dissertation. Will definitely post a link here for fun reading. Since I play all HUSNGs now, and I haven't posted on any other strat forums for a while, I am posting it there probably next week, but what I am thinking about should relate to all forms. I promise a real doozy.

Since you guys had a good thread on procrastination, any ideas on how to beat procrastination in poker?

I'm currently back to playing 28 hours in 'working' weeks but i want to get this up to 40 hours again.

working so far: forcing myself to just start a session. splitting my day into 3 sessions. traveling once a month for 5 - 9 days so i can see some benefit of the extra effort/stakes/focus. a goal.

but there are still days in which i suddenly don't care or not if i make the goal, or i'm close to hitting it so i'll lose interesting. or i'll force myself to play but then wont be playing well as it's forced then quit. and losing a day per week means it's impossible for me to hit the hours.

At first, I thought that my Pooh-Bah post was going to be more general. It ends up being about Heads up no limit sit and go tournaments specifically. I guess that many of the concepts are able to be used for other games. Early reviews are liking it. But those are from losing small stake players. I am interested in what the good players are going to say. The anticipation is NOT killing me, actually.

So tonight I split/won our home donkament again. This time there were 13 of us, including some "big shot" who was a friend of the host and others who came over from LA. They were fawning all over him and asked him where he played in LA. Oh the Bike, Commerce, Hollywood Park, you know, everywhere.

It wasn't that I had a problem with him initially, it's that he let this persona of Mr. Poker Big Shot go to his head and he was spouting things like how stupid it is to read books on poker (with the most ******ed logic ever, something like "well when you've been sucked out on for the 18th straight time you just realize that those books are a bunch of crap"...LOL WTF?). He would make this huge scene about counting all his outs and letting everyone know after every hand he lost/folded why he called or folded. He did play aggressive though and took down a lot of pots that way, but he also got his hand caught in the cookie jar a bit and had wild swings.

Most annoyingly, he wouldn't show his hand to give out information at showdown even when he should have been, instead relying on the donk/friendliness of everyone else to expose theirs and then only turned his over if it was a winner. Although it was a friendly game, I started to call him on this because I needed that info and he was annoying me, and he acted all indignant.

On the hand I busted him, a guy in front of me pushed with K-Jo, I pushed with two queens, and by this time he was shortstacked with only 2BB, one of which was already in the pot, so he called. We both flipped but he wouldn't of course. Why should he, he's Poker Jesus? I stopped the hand and told him to turn over his cards. After a mini-scene he flipped over something terrible like 34o but I can see why he played them in that situation. So annoying.

Just a few hands before this, a guy pushed, another guy pushed with AJo into my kings (only two pair above 3s I got all night were these and the hand above), which I shoved. He acted like the cameras were rolling while he deliberated for five minutes about what to do. He FINALLY folded the hand and carried on about how "it better not come diamonds". Seriously, you're going to call behind three sizable all-ins with just suited cards? I took down the hand and he was muttering something about two pair. I called BS, he said "well OK, I had two pair, but not THAT hand". Generally a douche but that was pretty funny. He copped to having Q-7 of diamonds, which I can only hope he's joking after all the coffeehousing.

The Snag Bar, Red Lodge Montana, Trip report

So, in my quest to find a live poker game I found myself in Red Lodge Montana. OK, So I was really there for a business meeting but quest sounds so much better.

Red Lodge is a really nice little town right at the base fo the Beartooth mountains and the other end of the Beartooth Highway from Yellowstone National Park. The Beartooth Hwy is really the most beautiful drive I have ever taken. Right up over the mountains topping out at 11,000 feet. Really nice.

Anyway, I was in town for two nights, Wednesday and Thursday. I tried to find a game on Wednesday night but there was not one running, but the bartender at the Bull'n Bear Saloon told me that there was a game on thursday at The Snag. FYI, Snag is a term used for a standing dead tree, usually left after a forest fire. These are also sometimes called widow makers because they are fairly dangerous. The snag actually has an old dead tree out in front of the place attached to the front of the building.

I hit the Snag at about 7:00pm figuring the game won't be going until 8:00 or 9:00 but to my delight it was fired up and there was a seat open. It was 2-6 spread limit with overs available to 2-12 , which translated into lots fo PF limping and then pretty much $6 bets after that. The table was filled with people who were having a really good time and had already seen more than a couple of drinks. I won't go into a lot of hand details because I always screw then up anyhow. I played fairly solid and was up at one point until my flopped set of kings got rivered by a donk catching runner runner to make his straight on the river. I ended up the evening dead even and had a ball playing with these people. Very fun night!

Ditto on a guy at a local game I played for the first time Friday. Running on 3 hours of sleep, my tolerance for his 30 minute monologues, hand guessing, analysis, and storytime was pretty low. He loved making "Hero" calls and explaining them when the board bailed him out. He's mid 40ish and saying "Ship it" after winning a hand. AAAAAAAGGGGGGGGG! Me being the new guy, he was kind enough to invite me to the PLO game in that "hey fish, come play" manner.

Anyhoo, 2/5 NL I'm at ~200 (down from 300 buy in) when 4 limp including bigshot and I check my BB w/Td8d. Flop is Tx5h3h. I lead for 15, 2 calls, bigshot makes a speech and emphatically makes it 75, button folds. I tank and decide he is FOS or drawing and shove for about 108 more. 2 folds and he says to his friend "Heeeeelllllll yeah I'm calling". He shows Tc2c...yes! Board pairs, J on the river, chop it....[censored] me to hell! He says "nice bet,it just wasn't enough ya know?" LOL

Overall the game was good. Nice set-up, a couple of weak spots, the host was super nice (Asian with a southern accent=awesome). Ended up +$165...chopped an $800 pot when I shoved AK on AA9 flop got called by KK and AT. 9 ball on the turn...

By the way, I guess they say like some other things in life, poker brings out the worst traits in people. Even I am guilty of excessive table talk to people in the hand at our home game, mostly because I'm having fun and not taking it seriously, but last night the host told me to tone it down a bit, heh.

This reminds me of Alobar's classic rant, which I hunted down. Link. Hilarious stuff.
