Katy,
I was there on business a couple times 9 years ago. The main things I remember are that it was sweltering hot in September and that FLL is a much better airport than MIA for getting in and out.

I'm looking for an active beach town with great artsy shops and a nice variety of cool restaurants. What Florida city would fit this description?

Ky, you would love St.Augustine. It's my favorite place in the U.S. it's arty, historical, and has some of the best beaches, shops, and B & B's in the world. It's on the First Coast, and as such, is more "Southern" than "Florida." it's within day trips of Jacksonville and Daytona, and an overnight trip to Savanah.
I went to college there and I will one day retire there.

It's also right next to Crescent Beach, which is often on lists of top 20 Beaches in the World.
And as an added bonus, if you tell me enough ahead of time when you're going, I'll make it a point to visit my family at the same time so we can meet up!

St. Augustine fits the bill. It is north, closer to Jacksonville, but from your description it is exactly what you are looking for. I love the place.

St. Augustine is one of the few places I've visited! It is really cool and I loved it. I was thinking of visiting south Florida for this trip. But I will keep St. Augustine in mind. I didn't know that they have a great beach nearby. That's cool.

Although, you really can't go wrong with Key West. Maybe spend a few nights in Miami and then a few in Key West?

how long a drive is it on that long bridge to key west?
Ever been to Ft. Lauderdale or Delray Beach?
