Tark coached the Spurs for a couple of months. He was cool. He's probably getting shortchanged on the tributes because of Dean Smith. John Wooden had enormous respect for Tark from the early days and was kinda his mentor.

The greatest putter I ever saw play. Some of his long putts to the center of the cup almost seemed supernatural. Used a mallet-head and it seemed as though his shoulders pivoted on ball bearings.

We also lost Charlie Sifford. While most of the players of that day would throw their cigarettes on the grass when making a shot, and then retrieve them for the next drag, Charlie could hit away with his stogie clenched firmly in his teeth. His swing was breathtakingly awkward, almost Trevinoesque, with the punchy backswing of a Doug Sanders. But the ball always straight down the middle.

RIP guys.

Your post, Phat, reminds me that we should wave a general good bye and ring a death knell to the fine art of smoking, cigs or stogies or otherwise. The sanctimonious moralists and their lackey minions have mounted a campaign against all good and luscious smoking activities that is driving me to drink (more that is). I recently saw a sign that evoked a draconian “No smoking within 20 ft of door” or some such nonsense. So in respect to those men of old and backswings and putts, I’m lighting up an Arturo Fuente Especiales, puff away, and knocked down some scotch.

Strange, I was having a discussion with a couple of people on this theme a couple of days ago.

Came to the conclusion that the 1960s was the first decade where the growth of televsion meant there were a lot more "celebrities" than from previous decades, when a few huge stars of film, music and politics dwarfed everyone else.

And celebs who were in their 20s and 30s in the 1960s are now moving into their 80s and dying a pretty fast rate.

Better get used to famous people dying, it's going to become a very regular occurance from now onwards.

He lived long and prospered!

Who remembers him as Paris the magician on Mission Impossible. I know I do.

Spock is the #1 fictional character for me. At the moment, I can't think of any other that's even close. RIP Leonard Nimoy.

I do also. It was odd to see him on that show after the Star Trek series went bust.

And yes he did live long and prosper.

I look forward to his eventually cloning and resurrection.

Re: Joseph Heller still dead, still at 76 (and other celebrity deaths)

Damn, this one really hit me. I had mostly forgotten, but Star Trek was a huge part of my youth, mans Spock was almost a role model. I can remember when the emotions of puberty would become too much for me at times, and I would pretend to be a Vulcan, with no emotion, and it would help. Silly, but it meant something to me at 12.

It is also logical to watch either ST III or ST IV, which were both directed by Nimoy.
