Here's an old podcast I did with my two sons concerning the great man and his greatest role. It's 4 years old, a commentary on my favourite Star Trek episode, and one where Leonard Nimoy puts the character of Spock on a whole new level.

Recorded in happier times that this, I hope it conveys some of the love our family feels towards Star Trek, and in particular Spock.

Saturnino Orestes Armas (Arrieta) Minoso, aka "Minnie" Minoso, much beloved by Chicago south siders. Even though he was not a part of the pennant winning 1959 Chicago White Sox, White Sox owner Bill Veeck presented Miñoso with an honorary 1959 pennant championship ring at the beginning of the 1960 season, saying that he had done as much as anyone in helping the White Sox reach the top of the league – partially through his influence in building a winning team, and partially because the Sox had acquired 1959 Cy Young Award winner Early Wynn in exchange for Miñoso in the 1957 trade (Wikipedia). His age was probably 89, but I have seen estimates up to 92.

What I don't understand is why Kirk didn't give Spock a shuttle craft and a pilot, since Spock was in no condition to "drive". Enterprise would get to Altair6 in time and Spock could get his, uh, personal business done.

He explains the Vulcan gesture here.

RIP Minnie. As a lifelong White Sox fan he was our claim to baseball history fame.

RIP Spock. I never understood the Star Trek allure?

The first Major League ball game I attended was in Yankee Stadium in the mid 50s. The White Sox were in town and Minnie was playing left field, which was enormous in those days. I was a Brooklyn fan, so I rooted for the Sox. He must have heard me yelling because he popped one over the plaques. I saw the ball take off, then lost it behind the upper deck, and saw a flash of white as it cleared the fence.

But my main memory is of how fast he was in the field and on the bases. Even for a major leaguer, he was fast. And the way he carried himself like a prince. I was just a kid -- I assumed he owned the White Sox because his posture suggested that he was the guy in charge. RIP Minnie. There are lesser players in the HoF.

Despite finishing in the top four for AL MVP four times, being named to nine All Star games, and winning three Gold Gloves, Minoso fell short in qualifying for the Hall of Fame, topping out at 21% of the vote on his last year of eligibility in 1988. The Veterans Committee considered him for induction last year, but he again fell short of the required number of votes.

aww, I love you put Nimoy in the thread title, either John Cole or Wookie.

I remember Drew Carey used Sam Simon as his phone-a-friend on Celebrity Millionaire.

I remember him on one of the WSOP shows. I think the great Norm MacDonald talked to him.

Terry Pratchett dead at 66. Best known for his Discworld books, coauthor of the funniest book I've ever read: "Good Omens"

A Friend of mine had that book and loaned it to me. Hilarious. I believe Pratchett co-wrote it with Neil Gaiman. Terry Gilliam wanted to do a movie of the book but it never came to fruition. Too bad. It would have been grand.

Well he can rest (in peace) easy knowing people who announced his death definitely remembered him by name.

Bobby Carradine (Lewis Skolnick from the Nerds movies) is apparently in bad condition after a wreck with an 18-wheeler last week. If this is to be the death of him then his dad picked the more fun way to go.

David and him were brothers, not father and son. The great John Carradine was the father of both.

Yeah dying of organ failure at an old age is more fun than a head on collision with an 18 wheeler where you don't die immediately.

WAIT you thought I meant the dude who died while jacking off!? WHAT!? HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA oh man kioshk.

No I meant John. It's just kind of amazing that kioshk went immediately to David when I said "fun". Wow.

Yes, I meant David.
