Dipping my toe into this forum and am hoping this is an interesting topic bec, being a movie buff, I've taken this up: What movie do you think would be best to show an audience of Londoners in the year 1800? I don't think any Sci-Fi would do bec they'd just be too confused and would require explanation. Nothing w/ modern tech, for that matter. No cars, no MRI's, any of that stuff. It'd have to be something that they could relate to.

Having thought it over for a while I'd show the original 'Ben-Hur' bec it's got everything including Christ, Romans complete w/ fleet action, and, ofc, the chariot race. Ben-Hur, that'd be best, imo.

Is the goal just to entertain the audience? Or is this some sort of alternate timeline where they could learn something and the future would be different. Important distinction imo.

Yes, just to entertain and certainly nothing sci-fi. Something that the audience could accept as brilliant new scientific way to present a play but something that they could relate to so to avoid a 'wtf was that?' response.

It seems to me that someone like Kenneth Branagh would have to be in it. I think I'll take the easy way out and go with Hamlet.

Shouldn't we scare the **** out of some old people though? I'm gonna go with a horror movie, but one I think they'd be able to relate to.

I'm saying Jaws

Chaplin's The Immigrant. The audience would get it. More importantly, it's Chaplin.

Titanic.

Or anything WW1/2 related.

Or maybe Despicable Me - 1, they would be confused as **** at animation, 2, they would think we are all going to have little yellow children in years to come.

edit: discussion at work has come up with Zulu.

An American Werewolf in London

Actually I first thought of the already mentioned Zulu. Warn 'em about reaching too far

Pretty much any movie would likely freak an 1800's person out though.

In that case I think it would have to be one of the classic WW2 films. I think they would be the most relatable and understandable. I haven't watched many films in that genre though so not sure which one would be best.

A Shakespeare adaption also seems like a good answer.... Hamlet was already mentioned... but maybe Branagh's Henry V would be even better?

WWII films have airplanes. I'd expected to see things like Cromwell or One Million B.C and stuff like that proposed.

You don't think an audience from 1800 would find people in airplanes with guns entertaining? I don't think it'd be that hard of a concept to understand. I've never seen Cromwell or 1 mil BC but they seem like reasonable suggestions.... this thread needs a poll now!

Dude, they had paintings and drawings. I'm sure they could figure out what was going on.

I would have said Zulu, also think Gone With The Wind would be a good choice.
