Basically it's somewhere fun to go if all you want to do is drink and eat. That was the purpose of our trip--it was a bachelor party--and it served our purpose well. I have no knowledge of the areas outside Bourbon Street because we spent almost all of our time there. I'm sure NOLA has lots to offer in high cuisine, arts, culture, history, etc., but I do not pretend to know anything about that stuff in NOLA. I did get to walk through Harrah's briefly--I wasn't going to waste any time playing cards there with only a long weekend to enjoy the city--and it looked like it had a decent poker room that is more or less integrated with the rest of the casino being separated by only a waist-high rail along the main walkway. Prime for walk-by traffic.
As for Bourbon Street itself, the only negative thing I can say about it is there are portions that smell bad. And I mean REALLY bad. But those pass and you're left with an expanse of fun and affordable restaurants, bars, clubs, and strip clubs full of friendly people, live music, and cheap beer.
So my advice is get a hotel somewhere near Bourbon Street, walk around, talk to people, and eat and drink to your heart's content. It's a great long weekend escape destination.
