soooo (grunching)

First off some genius used this song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fc62GWFORxM
in the ad for the movie... KRS ONE's black cop.... which was disturbing....
is there some ironic context im missing?

maybe im old fashioned, but it seems like he ( ice cube) is headed in the opposite direction of when he and the fellows in N.W.A. came out with the song EFF THE POLICE in 85 or 86 when I moved into the heart of North Philadelphia.... great album, but not exactly pro cop///

I heard this song all summer all day and all night in the musical mecca that i was lucky enough to inhabit....

What constitutes selling out? Doing the kids movie franchise, the coors light stuff, this, or it doesnt really matter... ice tea sang a song cop killer and now hes a tv detective....

so this struck me to be the same thing as if GWAR came out as Zoo spokesmen?

or like marilyn manson talking about the great new church down the street?

cognitive dissonance makes my dendrites ache and throb

"Selling out" is usually just a synonym for growing up and/or evolving priorities.

I like his Coors Light commercials where he's all mad about at it for being colder.

Maybe Eff Da Police was the sellout, pandering to whatever made a buck?

thanks sham!

i did not have that knowledge....

eazy e "with the criminal behavior", "with his bad self running things..." "we can go toe to toe in the middle of the cell" "nothing but a *** with a badge and a gun"

he had the best lyrics.....

i see the pandering logic too, hard not to chase buckets full of money by being an "entertainer"

Some of the lyrix sounded genuine,
im a word guy, they sounded pretty good, but what do i know about the hood? except for those 10 years in north philly

i guess money is useful, but are you looking over your shoulder for the real gangsters the rest of your life?

thats what happened to tupac with his high school f the performing arts background i would wager

talking the talk while real G's seethe

is Common a sell out for selling bluejeans?

He meant that Eazy E was a genuine gangster (he was a drug dealer before he went to the music business), not his lyrics. ICYDK, Ice Cube (and MC Ren) wrote all the lyrics for NWA. But Ice Cube wasn't a "genuine" gangster, living in a middle class neighborhood and going to technical school at the time he went to the music biz.

All the real thugs seem to die or go to prison, and would probably have problems making the adjustments necessary to sell out, and that's if they're lucky to last long enough to worry about it. I imagine from a business standpoint they'd be extremely difficult to manage too even compared to other young music acts.

It takes a ton of compromise and restraint and at least a little give a **** to hold a job, even one in show business. There aren't exactly characteristics found in your typical gangbanger.

gangbangers have to have a sense of compromise when it comes to the places they sell their goods

they use the kids because they know the law
these young soldiers learn the rules of the game and what is and what is not tolerated

they have to restrain themselves from killing cops and from robbing thier customers because it is still a business... the drug business

you are leveling yourself if you think that there arent all sorts of gangsters

the ones that want a blaze of glory type finish are accorded that ending
you also need people on the corner who know all about compromise and restraint because they need a "safe" place to do their business or they will scare all the customers away....

they havent read "think and grow rich" but they practice the principles...
repeat customers are their life blood.

the kind of respect and protection and honor your SNOOP gets on the steet is because the has put in the time and kept his mouth shut and did what he had to do...

ITS ALL A HUSTLE to inner city residents and the language reflects it when they straddle the working world and the thug world at the same time with their multiple hustles...

their multiple streams of income whose concepts are always talked about in marketing seminars you pay thousands for

i worked at a school in the hood where some of the employees of the school district also had employees on street corners selling weed for them, kids outside of the school with a rep for violence that protected him and let me tell you grabbing a dude like that as the only white dude in the bar is not advisable...

luckily i was rolling with even more dangerous female teacher who really hold the power, who was really running things and i knew the dude i was gripping up was a beach azz nword but HIS EMPLOYEES may not have known that and i am glad we all realized that we were all pretty drunk ......

Harry don't take this the wrong way but you sound blindingly Caucasian and high as a kite

fwiw I'd agree that not blasting away at every cop you see is at least a form of restraint but the standard I had in mind is maybe just a little higher. Also why is he "my" Snoop? And why am I thinking of "The Substitute" for the first time in like 10 years

Nah, man, this guy sounds like he is down with the streets for reals.

ummm
I navigated the streets to get to my gig which was hustling the queens english to future nba stars, rappers and doctors if you had read their 300 + journals every day, which i did.

I chose teaching because I love the beach and that was the perfect lifestyle, working 186 days a year.

My house was 20 blocks from my school and I lived there for a decade or more and frequently found myself in situations where 90 % of the people in this forum, I would wager, would literally poo themselves....

I was often the only white dude on the subway, bus, or standing on a corner waiting for a bus at the WRONG TIME of night....

It is what it is.

If I used terminology that allowed you to caricature me, I am happy to provide your amusement. I am glad you have it all figured out. you certainly are "mommies bes-est and brightest kid aren't you....... aren't you mommies big boy....."

My mom bought a house in the hood because she loved the garden, ( it was beautiful),

She also thought a schoolyard next door was a GREAT feature, and SHIPPED all her kids there to go to school in Philadelphia at Temple, Villanova, or to fulfill their drunken roofer destiny away from the peace and quiet of their NOW QUIET farmhouse...... by the time my sisters moved in i HAD to stay to protect them and the property so i ADAPTED....

Feel free to flame away, if that makes you happy. I am in the fulfillment biz.

I now live 30 mins from the beach in Mexico and work 15 hours a week and take a lot of naps...

I thought the sell out convo was interesting.

Chase your dreams kids, they DO happen,

but be careful what you dream of because the dreams may not MANIFEST themselves in a way you have foreseen.

Look at poor "white magic"....

how was his dream fulfilled in a way that levelled him at the same time?

hellmuth without a shirt and manboobs gif

(discuss among yourselves)

This. Easy E wasn't even a rapper according to Ice Cube. He addressed this and other issues OP mentioned on the podcast he did a while back with Jay Mohr
