My first post was July 22, 1997, two weeks after the opening of the forums. It was a grand time, with the mix of ideas, learning opportunities, personalities. There were intense clashes and great debates. In the first few years there was good representation from Edmonton (my home), but I don't see so much these days - are any of you out there?
Sklansky and Malmuth posted frequently in all forums. Later, some guy started sticking his nose into things - called himself "fossilman". One of many great additions to the crew. Steve Badger used to post frequently, until he totally withdrew. Abdul Jalib, Gary Carson, Izmet Fekali, and other names of lore. Then there were the "unknowns", like Louie Landale, Dave in Cali, Tom Haley, and so on, who made great contributions with their regular posting.
Internet poker was still in its infancy. Anybody remember irc poker? It has
exploded into a huge industry, and really changed how poker is played, even in casinos. The ability, these days, to generate and analyze enormous quantities of data, has really given us the opportunity to examine and rethink what we thought of as the right way to play. Online, now we have access to a great deal of information about our opponents. We don't need to remember how someone played, it's displayed right by his name or icon.
A lot has changed in the nearly 17 years that I have wandered in and out of these forums. I'm sure the old-timers who are still here have similar tales. I'm looking forward to the next 17 years. I won't be here all the time, but I'll look in, once in a while. I hope that poker continues to be a thriving business, and that some of you will still be here.
Eric
Many of us who still use are real names were around then, and I remember all those you mention. Badger had extensive film knowledge, especially in film noir. Srendi Vashtar also posted frequently, and while many contented themselves with poker discussion, Other Topics was visited by nearly everyone. You may remember Mark (later M), Vince Lepore, Rick Nebiolo, and the Feeney brothers as well.
