Perhaps the problem is my expectations were off and I was in the mindset of expecting a scary movie, when in actuality this is more of a sci-fi flick.

lol I have a lot to answer to in this thread. Sorry I'm a little behind and apologize to Faux Pas for being really late to back up and answer his recommendation question about Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon with Nathan Baesel. Another extremely unique and clever film with a script that's full of humor and homage. It's a love letter to the slasher sub genre. Highly recommended, here's my short netflix review that remains on the top after all these years so I'm guessing that the short and sweet of it managed to capture the essense, I guess:

Wow! That's one thing I can say about Nathan Baesel's performance. I loved this movie. Clever and funny and packed with strong performances overall. Nice to see old pro's like Wilson and Englund, and in the same movie no less. This is a mockumentary, spoof, homage that then morphs into a slasher movie. Script, acting, direction and production values all fell into place to make this a unique film. See what it takes to make a horror movie icon like Mike, Jason or Freddy. If you even remotely like this genre you should see this. If you love the genre, this is a must see!
btw as per the humble request of Mr. Wookie, Leslie Vernon is not on instant watch but you can rent the disc from netflix. I will try to make sure if anything I recommend is on instant watch, I'll link it here. I can tell you that as far as I know, all the French and Italian recommendations are not on instant watch at this time but netflix has all of these discs to rent.

I hope not Holy Wall of Text by the time I'm through here but sorry if it does.

Lastcardcharlie! Thank you, that was really sweet of you.

Splice was an interesting sci-fi but I was aware when I saw it at the theater that it wasn't horror so my expectations were properly set to enjoy an oddball sci-fi. Better yet kids, if you like sci-fi paired up with horror a really recent film that I highly recommend that mixes genres quite nicely is Pandorum with Ben Foster and Dennis Quaid and whatdoyaknow? It's on Instant and here's your link: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Pa...?trkid=2361637
My netflix short review for Pandorum:

Well this is a pretty tense, suspenseful and highly entertaining flick! I had a great time viewing this mysterious, edge of your seat, claustrophobia inducing tale that has a kind of Aliens meets The Descent feel. This also has serious mystery and plotting to go along with all of the edge of your seat action. A little gore and let me tell ya, what's on the ship will creep you out. Warning ahead though, people that don't care for that blue lighting and quick cuts may get annoyed but I sure didn't. To me, once you get used to the blue and steel hue with lots of dark shadows and blackness, you'll find your eyes get used to it. That wash actually fits with this film like a glove. You really don't want to know much going into this. I think the less you know the better off you are. Quaid is great in here and Ben Foster even better! This is his flick and he owns this character and this movie. Well done Mr. Foster, I had a good time. Just note that horror fans should enjoy this movie just as much as sci-fi buffs. Really, good times, go see this flick!

I want to address PlayerMVP and his list, was wondering what Hills Have Eyes is that rating for? The original or the Aja's remake? If it's the remake, it happens to be one of the better remakes in existance, imo. Maybe because I thought the original happened to be pretty ripe for a remake. I also really dug The Hills Run Red, I liked the look of the villain in that film, he's creepy with that cracked up doll face! It's not an extraordinary or anything but it's kind of a cool indie. The only one on your list that I really didn't like at all was Sorority Row but that's probably because it's a remake that I found not nearly as entertaining, creepy or cool as the original House on Sorority Row: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Th...?trkid=2361637 Ouch they don't even have the disc for rent anymore. Sawwy

Sor here's a cool recommend for PlayerMVP, not friends going on vacation but a couple on vacation, it also falls into the killer kids sub genre but let me just say....it's f'n brutal folks. Eden Lake is a film from across the pond and I happen to love those Brits for their contribution to this genre and sorry it's not on instant but netflix does have the disc for rent.
http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Ed...?trkid=2361637

Netflix review for Eden Lake: Wow! This may be one of the more cruel, mean, realistic and well written horror movies I've viewed in a long time. It's also beautifully filmed and amazingly well acted. Performances across the board were fantastic but where did they find these amazing kids? Jack O'Connell I believe is the head gang leader and he's truly frightening. Forget whatever you think you may know about this film going into it. You will still be surprised by the time it's over. Not only will you be surprised but you'll be depressed and sickened by the behavior that was presented to you via this film. This is very realistic but don't expect the usual revenge. This is survival at its most real and torture at its most devastating. I can't recommend this horrific ordeal from across the pond enough to horror fans. Beware for others, there is torture in this movie and it's also done in a very real fashion. What makes this film different is the intelligence in the characters and the writing. This isn't the stupid, predictable girl runs and trips and gets caught kind of film. You simply have to see it to believe it. It's different. Harsh as hell but very different. It will take you through various rounds of emotions and it will spit you out at the end, all chewed up and raw! Horror fans rejoice in the intelligence of Eden Lake. Betcha you won't want to go camping anytime to soon.

Sorry I seem to start a lot of my reviews with Wow! lol just noticed but apparently I can't help myself when I find something unique!

I kid you not, it may end up being my favorite horror entry this year. So far anyway. I freaking love Lola! p.s. doesn't Xavier look like a young, male version of Hilary Swank? lol

btw - though I hate this term for our sub genre's, if you're going to make a torture/porn then this is how it's done and with that being said, I hope The Loved Ones is the final statement!

Okay, I know I'm not right in the head but I think everyone should fall in love with Lola! On a more serious note, Robin McLeavey nailed this role and I like my psycho's psychotic and SHE is the Prom Queen of psychosis, imo. Her face and expressions along with her vocalizations were perfect! The girl can turn on a dime! SICK!

Ive already seen Eden Lake, a couple times actually when it first came out, its kind of like The Strangers in a sense but just a different environment. Eden Lake I actually went back to add to my list but I was unable to edit my post for some reason.

Also id like to add the movie Battle Royale, its a Japanese/Chinese movies with English subtitles which is the only non-English movie I think ive seen and actually really enjoyed, English being my only language. Its a movie where ~30 highschool students are put on an island with bombs around there necks, and they have 48 hours to kill each other, with only 1 student being allowed to live, if there is more than 1 alive at the end of the 48 hours than the bombs around there necks go off. Its kind of like the Condemned in a sense which wasn't really a horror movie at all, but this was way more gorier with a lot of suspense and its a pretty brutal movie compared to The Condemned.

Yay! Another Loved Ones fan! Now when is this going to come out of release Hell and be available to the masses in the States? Inquiring minds want to know......Sad

PlayerMVP - I actually preferred Eden Lake to The Strangers, as much as I dig Liv Tyler (mega fan of her dad until he jumped the shark) I felt like The Strangers didn't have all that much to offer in the way of substance or suspense. For me, it was a predictable run but I did like the look of it and the set pieces. I'll second your recommendation for Battle Royale and I'll also second your Wrong Turn franchise recommends, at least for 1 and 2, I haven't seen the third entry yet as I've heard it was pretty bogus. It's been on my back burner though. I'm a big fan of the first Wrong Turn as I thought for the backwoods cannibal sub genre, it was kind of scary/suspenseful in parts. The second entry is totally worth it for the gore but it's more of a laugh a minute (especially for freak jealousy and sex scene?) but it remains much more comedic than the first one.

lol I hope you didn't feel ignored but I'm with you here, hence my love and pic for Sid Haig. This is the only film that Rob Zombie has done so far that I love. I'm not a huge fan of House of 1000 Corpses. It smacked to much of Texas Chainsaw rip and I understand that he was going for that but for me, that's neither creative or terribly entertaining as it's been there done that a million times. Kind of redundant if you ask me but The Devil's Rejects was completely original and I dug the writing in there. It's the best writing he's ever produced, imho. I am hoping Rob can get back on the horse without remakes...re-imaginings unless it's Ilsa - She Wolf of the S S but I sure wish he'd dump his non actress wife out of this film in particular. Sheri was fine for Devil's Rejects because let's face it, for her Baby was probably pretty easy to call forth but when called upon to do something real or different, I don't think she can cope. Since Ilsa isn't likely to come to fruition, at least not yet, I'm guessing that if it did, I wouldn't get my non actress Sheri Moon make a wish either! *smirk*

So technically, Red State is being classified as a Horror film.

I'm not a big fan of Kevin Smith films, though he definitely has contributed some great films. And some awful films. Most of the heavy dialogue he is known for comes in at the first half of the film, with a great performance by Michael Parks, who plays the Preacher of an extremist Christian fundamentalist group.

The best part about the film is the unpredictability. It's not as shocking as it was touted to be, but it also doesn't play into any of the conventional Hollywood cliches. Melissa Leo is so convincing in her part, as always. The film also has a political/religious commentary undertone going on the entire time.

I'm really glad to hear that Red State comes off well even if it isn't the shocker it's touted to be but you know how that goes. I know, right? The Woman should be on it's way to us soon, I hope. The first of these books prior the The Woman is Offspring which was also made into a film and released by Sam Raimi's failing distribution company, Ghost House Underground is here for a view on instant watch but I'm not recommending it. The execution for this was terrible, not a good film on any front but here's the link: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Of...?trkid=2361637 If you watch don't say I didn't warn. Also, were you aware that there is another movie regarding The Girl Next Door subject matter with the indominable Ellen Page? It's called An American Crime: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/An...?trkid=2361637 not an instant though. It is an easier watch than TGND but not by much and the only reason I say that is because An American Crime has some of the courtroom drama sprinkled within. You do know that this was a real case in Indianna and the girl Sylvia Likens was indeed killed in the fashion portrayed in TGND? I read a book about this crime written from the view of the victim called The Basement, authored by Kate Millett and it's the hardest real crime book I've ever read and I've read a lot.

With that out of the way, the other great Jack Ketchum adaptation to film is The Lost with Marc Senter. Here's my review of The Lost from netflix:

I haven't seen a character like this since Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet. Ray Pye is a whacked out, high strung psycho and Marc Senter does him complete justice! Marc makes him totally unique when he could have just fallen into the everyday sociopath category. He doesn't, where did they find this guy? I really dug this movie. Highly stylized direction just really makes this whole movie pop. I haven't read the book but I'm sure going to do so now. This is a seriously twisted movie and not for the faint of heart. Everything from the music to the actors to the directing fits the frenetic feel of this movie all the way down to the use of fly sounds. It's crazy! Seriously, if you are not a fan of Lynch or Blue Velvet type characters with a dash of Bale's American Psycho thrown in then you probably won't like this. If you are, this is bad to the bone! This is good, modern american horror and these guys did us horror fans proud! *sniff* Almost brings a tear to my eye! I'm going to keep my eye on the director, Chris Sivertson. He is definitely one to watch. Thanks to Lucky McKee for taking on Jack Ketchum projects! Smart move.

Guess what? If you haven't seen it? It's on instant and I highly recommend a view! Here's the link: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Th...?trkid=2361637

btw I wasn't putting a synopsis with my review because I felt with all the links in place it would be redundant. I hope you haven't seen The Lost yet, I think you'll like it even if it is a touch long in the tooth.

I saw this movie when I was a kid and it really scared me. I still think it's effectively creepy as an adult. It was kind of surreal, especially with the killer running around in the simple plastic mask, yellow rain slicker, patent leather shoes and tights. That look is so sublimely creepy and childlike. It's a twisty giallo story complete with red herrings, creepy looking scenes and camera work. It's catholicism riff made this very controvercial when it was first released under the title Communion in 1976. I think if you are a fan of the genre this is one of the must see movies. The acting is good, especially Paula Sheppard as Alice. She really was a good actress and yet never went on to do much else. Some of the other players overact a bit but it still works. There is some gore in this movie but it's not over the top or anything like that. This movie relies mostly on creepy atmosphere and there are some very memorable scenes. Even church takes on a creepy look in this film. I must confess that I have a soft spot in my heart for this movie and rightly so as I am a giallo fan and this is very reminiscent of those types of films. If you are a fan of the great Italian gialli then I recommend this movie to you. Oh and yes, it is Brooke Shields first movie role, but don't blink or you'll miss it, and Paula is the kid who steals this show!
Yeah, so on your recommendation I got around to watching this. I have no real issues with what you said, so I think we think about the movie in the same way. Here's my review:

Alice Sweet Alice (1976)

An interesting little thriller that plays like an Italian Giallo, but is set and made in America. Got famous for the brief presence of Brooke Shields at a young age (and she never acted better than in this), but I find many of the actors interesting – particularly the girl under suspicion for murdering her sister and others – played by Paula Sheppard very effectively. She actually reminds me of a young Barbara Steele somewhat (who was a scream queen in a lot of Italian horror in the 60s, such as Black Sunday).

The movie borrows from a few sources among Giallo, and is also strongly reminiscent of Don’t Look Now, but it also seems to be an inspiration for later movies. The music and the use of the music, for example, seems a direct precursor to the music and its usage in Halloween, coming 2 years after this.

The director shows flair, with a good build up of tension both in plotting and his use of shots and music, but also in the use of some very strange characters (like the grossly overweight, effeminate landlord who seems morbidly interested in the young girls who live in his apartments, and seems to eat the catfood he feeds to his kittens, and has revolting stains on the front of every pair of trousers he wears). He also uses in-plot music to add to the weirdness (watch out for ‘three little fishies in an itty-bitty pool’).

Overall, recommended and worth seeing.

7/10

So...I was watching a disc from netflix when the trailer to this appeared: The Silent House aka La Casa Muda http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Th...?trkid=2361637 it's not out yet and only on save with no date but this looked really good and I'm kind of psyched to see it BECAUSE - the entire film was done in one, long, continuous take. That's a seriously difficult way to go and just judging by the trailer, for that filming avenue, it looks terrific. Anyway, looks like a pretty cool Spanish film and then imagine my shock when this film isn't even out yet? We have this one in the listing! American remake? wtf? Already? http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Th...?trkid=2361637
Kinda sad, imo, when the original Spanish film hasn't even been released here in the States!

Well here's another anyhow, the only other full feature I've seen that was done in one, continuous shot was with Angela Bettis (I heart her) titled The Circle: http://movies.netflix.com/Movie/The-...335?trkid=1660 not on instant but you can rent the disc from netflix. It was an interesting ride.
