I should figure this out because im guessing props make a huge difference.

Hey gang.

Going on a fishing trip next week and will also get some camping in later this summer as well. Most other supplies are covered except for a sleeping bag and a pad.

Any recommendations? I have kicked around for sales and seen some gear, the cheap or on sale stuff just seems like such garbage quality and I'm not opposed to spending a couple hundred on a quality pad and bag (total).

Seems like for inflatable pads, Therm-A-Rest are pretty good and get good reviews? What about bags? My only worry about the thinner pads (1-3") is that I am a side sleeper and the pad won't provide enough cushion, but others seem to say they are good enough. Fwiw I am 6'2, 215 lbs.

Will be sleeping in probably 0-5 deg C weather on the shoulder seasons and warmer than that in summer.

Lightweight or compact isn't super duper important as it's less hiking but more fishing/camping, but they would be nice to haves.

Any suggestions?

unless hiking way in get a rectangular bag and not as warm as you think. and bags ratings are not even close to accurate. when cold in them put on more clothes.

as for pads, a foam one is warmest and most comfortable. blowup pads slide you all over the place and are not big enough. but easy to pack in the back country..

also have a tarp under your tent. keeps the sticks and stones from poking holes and the water away. essential.

I've been using the same Therm-A-Rest for over 25 years and love it. It's rectangular and the color of old rust-oleum -- don't know the model number. Easy to adjust the air on it so you don't bounce around.

ive got one like that also. but for car camping in goes a big foam pad.

its almost like the difference in sleeping on your floor on the rug versus the mattress.

Nice bucketmouth!

The day my wife cleans a fish is the day I die from my heart stopping in shock. Although, I must admit, she has field dressed her own deer and elk.

Working on a fishing outing out of Emeryville CA to go after Rockfish and Ling cod. Ya, it's a partyboat thing but from the reports they have been doing very well.

Hopefully you caught a couple of smaller ones for the table. They get a bad rap, but I think its a delicious eating fish.

I'm trying to set a goal for myself. I plan on bow hunting for the first time ever in September - December. If I start shooting now, how many arrows is a good number to have under my belt before September 1?

I do understand the ramifications of errand shooting and harming deer, thus I want to be confident. I am thinking lots of time in the woods and only taking 20 - 25 yard shots should be my parameters. How important is a range finder?

TIA

i hunted long before any special equipment was used. but the standard was you had to be good enough to be able to hit your vital spot within 30 yards every time. if that was the farthest you would shoot.

there is nothing worse than sticking an arrow in an animal and having it run off with a shot that wasnt fatal.

basically you practice every day so set up a target in your yard and go for it. with compound bows and sights it is much easier, which is too bad as for most it is a way to get an easy deer before gun season.

Ray is correct about shooting everyday.
You can get away with less but if you really want to be good it's like anything else....

As far a range finders go..they are actually pretty key. If I had a nickle for every time I've heard...i shot him for 20 and he was actually at 30yards ect...

And your not going to be able to range the deer itself your going to need to range points all around you while waiting and Judge distance based on the deers relationship to your previously ranged markers

it depends on how you hunt. if you walk them up then its instinctive shooting and tough but really true hunting at its finest.

from a stand or a blind before you get in you should have all the distances marked or known that you can get a shot from. thats what your distance finder is for or you can learn to pace it off and with just a little practice and be almost exact.

and learn to shoot from the positions you will be shooting from. not just standing up like target practice. in the field there will be branches in the way and the deer pop up in odd places where you are shooting from unusual positions.
