I'm from the UK and US sports arent my forte though am looking to expand into getting to know about them more.

I had seen a Michael Jordan documentary on youtube about him playing for the Wizards so may watch that soon but can any body recommend some similar doc's that I need to watch?

NFL, basketball, baseball, anything I'm happy with.

I literally have seen 0 so any recommendation would be appreciated. Long interviews fine. I've seen Hoop Dreams many years ago

Thanks

Hoop Dreams.

It's a little old but it's the best there is.

The Battered Bastards of Baseball, about the minor league team Kurt Russell's dad bought and ran in the 70s, unforgettable and joyous.

Also Harvard Beats Yale 29-29, about a semi-famous 1968 football game told decades later by interviews with the men who played it. You get to see real footage from the game too.

I know. I saw it many years ago and remember enjoying it.

However, I was potentially looking for some material which may give me some ideas at excelling in sports/poker/other aspects of life.

I mentioned the Jordan doc because even though I havent yet seen it, even I know he was the best. Therefore there should be some material in there that will give some hints eg. on work ethic, mindset etc.

Any sport fine. Just want to learn from the masters.

Pretty much 70-80% of those ESPN 30 for 30s are great, they're all on Netflix.

Undefeated - Story about a high school football team in Memphis that hasn't won a game in a few years and is coached by a volunteer businessman. It won the Oscar for best documentary a few years ago.

Senna is also excellent.

Thanks for the recommends guys.

I know the Senna doc. I liked it though I've never really thought how I could learn to be a better x from a F1 driver.

How they do you improve your driving? I wonder if any of the top drivers has explicitly talked on the subject or written a book in depth.

Why do you think watching a documentary will help you get better at anything?

???

I'll equate it to poker and throw the question back at you:

Can watching a poker training video make you a better poker player?

Why do think a documentary is like a training video?

Assault in the Ring mentioned already - I'll 2nd that.

Most sports docs produced by HBO are good ones.

Facing Ali.

Back Nine at Cherry Hills - The Legends of the 1960 US Open

Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise & Fall of Jack Johnson.

One of the Doc's about Big Wave Surfing.

Baseball - Ken Burns

I watch lots of doc's about anything I find interesting. I think u would enjoy the ones above although there are a lot of other really good sports docs.

Winning Time, about Reggie Miller vs. the Knicks (mostly), is one of the most entertaining ones. Netflix.

Don't know what you are trying to achieve by saying this. Looks like you trying to be a dick.

But of course documentaries help you to be better. Obviously its not the sole purpose or even intention of a documentary, but likely you will pick up on things and go 'oh, I could try that', or 'yeah that is a different/better way to look at that' etc

The Armstrong Lie - Alex Gibney doc, he set out to document the Armstrong comeback but little did he know he would be in the thick of it when Armstrong was exposed for lying for basically his entire career. It's compelling, great story-telling.

Head Games - Steve James explores head injuries in youth and pro sports. It's the elephant in the room and changed the way I watch contact sports like hockey and football. It's a tough watch, highly recommended.
