I tried out for College Jeopardy! in Boston in 1990. There were about 200 people there, and I think about 20 people passed the written test, maybe 30. I was thoroughly embarrassed at how little I knew on the written exam (they didn't tell you how many you got wrong, but it was pretty easy to know what you didn't get right). Much of the stuff on there was far more "trivial" than what was ever done on the show. If you pass the written exam, you should certainly know most of the stuff that was on the show. I used to be able to get about 60 percent of the boards in the regular game, at that time, and about 90 percent of the college and high school boards. The problem is that the vast majority of people who pass the written test are absolute stones of boredom. All of the best champions (when I used to still watch) were miles ahead in social interactions.

I'd love to take the online test on those dates, but I'm sure I would still fail it miserably, since my knowledge of the kind of stuff they ask on the tests has probably depressed even further over the last 21 years. Hopefully I will remember to take the online test, because it might be fun.

Man, I would be atrocious at this. A lot of this is stuff only American natives would know, or someone who has studied American history.

I'd do ok on the other stuff, but only ok.

Ugh, I got called for the live auditions last year (pretty sure I bombed it), but I can't try out this year, because I'm technically in the contestant pool for 18 months. Pretty dumb policy, imo.

Wife badgered me into registering. I do well when playing along with the show; occasionally there's a day where I clearly would have won if I'd been there. However, there are gaping holes in my knowledge that you could drive a truck through. Doubt I'll pass, but it should be fun to take.

ha... don't be so sure. a large percentage of the game is performing under pressure and buzzer skill.

Well yeah, of course...both tough things to quantify. I'm talking more about days where I knew lots of answers that no contestants were getting or were answering wrong, which takes the buzzer out of the equation. Perhaps instead of "occasionally" I should have said "once in a blue moon".

yeah i don't mean to be a dick but there are shows where i miss maybe 5 questions in the entire game and i still don't think "oh i for sure would have won that one!"

I agree completely. The only time I know I would have won is when all three contestants keep guessing throughout the show--and that's rare.

I'm just glad when every couple shows I know an answer (non-sports of course) that none of the contestants even buzz in on. I usually tell my wife "what? How did none of them know that?" then they go on to own 14th Century Javanese Basketweaving category and I think "how the **** do they know this???"
