Submarine (2010) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1440292/

Such a smart, witty, sad, beautiful, quirky movie.

Here's the synopsis from imdb:
Precocious Oliver struggles with being popular in school but when a dark-haired beauty takes interest in him, he's determined to become the best boyfriend in the world. Meanwhile, his parents' already rocky relationship is threatened when his mother's ex-boyfriend moves in next door. Oliver makes some unorthodox plans to ensure that his parents stay together and that Jordana still likes him.

Tape (2001) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0275719/

Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard. That's the WHOLE cast.

From imdb:
Based on a three-character, one-act play, Tape is set entirely in Room 19 of a seedy motel in Lansing, Michigan rented by Vince, a ill-tempered, outgoing party animal/drug dealer who's visited by his old high school friend Jon, a documentary filmmaker, where they pass the time reminiscing about the good old times which take a turn when Vince records their conversation with Jon admitting to a possible date-rape of Vince's old girlfriend Amy, who later shows up and opens up a new wave of talk and arguments about whose story is fact or fabricated.

Directed by Richard Linklater, who also directed:
Slacker (1991)
Dazed And Confused (1993)
Before Sunrise (1995)
SubUrbia (1996)
Waking Life (2001)
The School Of Rock (2003)
Before Sunset (2004)
A Scanner Darkly (2006)

Great acting by all three in the movie, and it is one of those movies that by the end of it, you're thinking "WTF just happened?" and you are finding yourself watching it again.

Comment rates 8.4 on sarcasm meter.

This is a wonderful, beautiful, and often incredibly moving and sad story. Here's the description from imdb:

Quote:
Setsuko and Seita are brother and sister living in wartime Japan. After their mother is killed in an air raid they find a temporary home with relatives. Having quarreled with their aunt they leave the city and make their home in an abandoned shelter. While their soldier father's destiny is unknown, the two must depend on each other to somehow keep a roof over their heads and food in their stomachs. When everything is in short supply, they gradually succumb to hunger and their only entertainment is the light of the fireflies.
That's actually a **** description of a great movie, but I'd rather not spoil the material other than to say it's extremely moving precisely because it is not a constant barage of sad-sackiness, but an intimate portrayal of kids still being kids even during tragedy. Also, it is an autobiographical story--the writer is the older brother. The animation is first rate as well.

In my mind this movie is better than 'the Bicycle Thief' and somewhat similar in theme. But that is not a knock on 'the Bycycle Thief' at all. Not gonna' lie, I cried. NOW WHO'S A SOCIOPATH?!?!?

Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay...

A wonderful film that has a realistic view of the homeless and abandoned children in India. You follow a boy aptly named Krishna along his hopeless journey to get back home to his family. A parable for India itself.

How does IMDb calculate rating and ranking?

You need to know that the people in this forum tend to be pretty well informed about movies. I agree that few "normal" filmgoers have seen City of God, but a great many here have. It's nearly the equivalent of recommending Citizen Kane here. I can tell you that few people I know in real life have seen it, so I don't think it's a terrible recommendation for certain people.

Nair's work--at least in India--is well worth watching, and this is a good one. Haven't seen her biopic Amelia, but the reviews were terrible.

I see what you are saying, I just feel too often these types of threads turn into who can post the most obscure movie that no one else knows about. In any event, carry on!

I tried to watch Amelia also... I could not complete the task.
