"An unnamed narrator wanders through the Winter Palace (now the main building of Russian State Hermitage Museum) in Saint Petersburg. The narrator implies that he has died in some horrible accident and is a ghost drifting through the palace. In each room, he encounters various real and fictional people from various time periods in the city's three-hundred-year history. He is accompanied by "the European", who represents the nineteenth-century French traveller, the Marquis de Custine (The fourth wall is repeatedly broken and re-erected; at times the narrator-director and the companion interact freely with the other performers, and at other times, they go completely unnoticed)."

I'd select one of Sokurov's lesser known films, Mother and Son, which features some amazing cinematography and a strangely moving story.

This used to be well known, but I doubt many today know it at all. It's a fabulous documentary, even if you've never surfed.

i've posted this in one of those movie draft threads but in case someone missed it:

It's an incredibly bleak story and i just love the fact that visualy it's the exact opposite.
The movie tells the depressing life story of a woman. She grows up to be a teacher, loses her job, has an abusive boyfriend, goes to jail, becomes a prostitute and after that it's just getting worse and worse.
this is an extremly unique movie and if you havent seen it you should def do it right now!

I'm sure this film is more known now with the rise in popularity of Japanese films, but I still wanted to mention "Visitor Q". This movie has one of the most bizarre and greatest opening sequences ever. The daughter scolding her father with repeated taunts of "Early Bird!" because he came to fast is f*cking priceless.

I also liked California Dreaming which is a 1979 movie also starring Glynnis O'Connor but paired up with Dennis Christopher this time. Also, something of a coming of age movie. Christopher comes to California for the summer where he experiences the pleasure and pain of growing up.

I pretty much like all of Robbie Bensons movies but none of them are what would really be considered great. They all seem to have a certain entertainment value to them though. I caught Jeremy last year on cable and it was pretty good. Benson/O'Connor team up in Ode to Billy Joe too but its not as good as Jeremy.
My favorite Benson movies were Running Brave and One on One.

Re: A film that you would recommend that most people would not have seen or heard of
Don't know how to embed or anything, but the movie "This is England" makes me cry nearly every time I've seen it. It's about a 12 year old boy living in England who gets kind of adopted by a group of skinheads, and then dragged into a racist type of atmosphere, and shows how he reacts to it. Absolutely incredible.
Just looked it up and it won an award for Best British Independent Film, so might not be as obscure as I thought, but nobody I've spoken to in the states has seen it.

Reason: award?
