Not sure what took me 5 years to finally get this independently released album from one of my all-time favorite singer/songwriters. I can't believe it took so long.
Like her previous solo work, the songwriting is amazing. What separates this one from her more polished studio albums is how crystal clear her vocals and instrumentation are. Clean, crisp, unassuming production lets McKee's voice stand out as the true American treasure that it is.
Interestingly, Peddlin' Dreams is less country-sounding than her other work. Less rootsy and bluesy. It's more straight-forward and heartfelt.
What an album, what a talent. How this woman wasn't one of the biggest stars of the last 30 years I have no idea.

May have mentioned this before ITT but I saw her in a small Hollywood area club shortly after this album came out. Her parents were at the front table and Maria was very nervous. From the talk/vibe it was apparent it was the first time she played out in a while. Maria had gained weight and made thinly veiled references to suicide attempts and a lost life. I remember when she said, in reference to the time her band warmed up U2, when "I was was young and foolish I was young and foolish". She talked about living in a small apartment with her cat and boyfriend and struggling to pay the bills. She said it poignantly and with considerable regret.
If I recall correctly she played "Season at the Fair", "Peddling Dreams", "The Horse's Life", "People in the Way" and "Everyone's Got a Story" from "Peddlin' Dreams" along with a few songs from "High Dive" and several from her first two solo albums. She also sang a killer solo version of
Shelter along with a far less rocked out version of
Ways to Be Wicked. Here's Maria doing
Shelter almost 25 years ago.
More of Maria rocking out (fronting Lone Justice) in the eighties:
I Found Love
Sweet, Sweet Baby (I'm Falling)
Thanks for posting Don. This is whiskey and a beer music so I'll have to get back later in the day
