McDonald’s says, for instance, that in the past year their restaurants have served more than 200 million cups of fruit through menu options like Fruit & Maple Oatmeal, while neglecting to mention this dish contains 32 grams of sugar — more than a cup of Coca-Cola. Look I grew up in a lower-middle class family of 6. My mom bought a package of chop meat and a can of string beans. She made a hamburger in a pan and served it on a plate. No bun. With string beans. That was a typical dinner. And I doubt it cost more than 6 happy meals.

And "time cost", really?

Mind you, at Wetherspoon's (UK pub chain) on a Tuesday you can get Sirloin steak, chips (fries), peas, tomato, mushroom and pint of Guinness all for £6.50. I don't know how they do that.

I may fly over just for that. I also love your English fry-ups zomg. Nothing more righteous than a solid bigass breakfast. I even like the tomatoes and beans.

That said, I'm not saying smokers should be despised. For most of them, it's a very strong addiction. The part that is really dumb is starting to smoke, but most people do that when they are, well, dumb kids.

Smokers make me think WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO YOURSELF much more thsn fatties. Not in a judgmental way exactly its more like I can understand you just love you some food. The appeal of cigarettes is beyond me. I assume there's some pleasure associated because otherwise wat. It smells terribly too. Second hand smoke never bothered me much. I just don't understand why anyone starts; I get that quitting is difficult.

My dad smoked from a young age and quit for 20 years then started again and still smokes. I was devastated when I found out. I just don't understand. Now that made me angry.

LOL! Mmmm fries

Did you see the article about the teacher who actually lost weight eating nothing but McDonalds?

Quote:
"You could lose weight any way you want as long as you eat less and you're conscious," said Young [a nutritionist who also appeared in the doc Super Size Me]. "I think in this case what was happening is he was aware of the total amount that he was allowed, and I think that is what helped him lose weight." In other words, Cisna was simply using portion control to lose weight.

It's also no shock to find that there are many not-as-bad-for-you items on the menu at McDonald's, she added. The problem, said Young, is that most people who walk into a McDonald's restaurant don't have the discipline (nor the figurative weight of students counting on them for a school project) to resist ordering high-calorie foods.
But you hit the nail on the head with whether McDonald's healthy selection of foods is actually better for you.

Quote:
In addition, McDonald's newer, "healthier" choices leave a lot to be desired, and can sometimes even be worse for you than their traditional offerings. According to Mcdonald's nutrition information, the Bacon Ranch Salad with crispy chicken and ranch dressing, for instance, is 570 calories and contains 1,400 milligrams of sodium and 36 grams of fat -- 58 percent and 56 percent of one's recommended daily allowance, respectively. A Big Mac, on the other hand, is 550 calories and contains 29 grams of fat and 970 milligrams of sodium.
Many a weight loss attempt has been ruined by someone failing to track their calories and instead just eating more healthily. Sure, a salad (probably) has more veggies than a Big Mac, but douse it in dressing and you've defeated the point. There are times when I'll gleefully indulge in some fast food, but that's because I carefully selected the purchase after reviewing the nutrition to evaluate its caloric comparison to the meal I would have had instead.

Smokers are clearly a drain on society but most states have opted to tax the hell out of them so they'll either quit or contribute tax money to the medical care they will undoubtedly need.

Obesity also costs society billions in health care costs but their costs are shared equally by the healthy and the obese.

When people calculate health care costs of obesity or smoking do they assume that thin nonsmokers just die without ever visiting a doctor?

If I recall correctly, obesity is the number one preventable health issue in America right now. passed smoking at least 5 years ago.

Re: Fat People: Disgust and Social Stigma

You almost never see smokers anymore. I'm really surprised at how many people have quit or cut way down. I know those things cost and arm and a leg but I think there's more to it than that. I think some quit and those left felt less and less accepted and slowly began quitting as well and it's been kind of an avalanche effect.

Didn't smoking become popularized by Humphrey Bogart and film noir? The smoke looked good on screen in black and white and so all those old stars smoked in the films and then the sheep wanted to pretend they were Bogart so they all started smoking like god damn idiots. 70 some years later and we still haven't eradicated cigarettes. lol society.

In the '80s and '90s it seemed like half the people smoked. And they could smoke in grocery stores, hospitals, malls, almost everywhere. Unreal.

Now the only place I ever go where I see smokers is at a casino.

Re: Fat People: Disgust and Social Stigma

A number of years ago I had an argument with Blarg. He stated that certain groups, based on the area where he lived, rewarded obesity, indeed even encouraged it. But I don't see that American culture rewards obesity and didn't at the time. Certainly, despite the rage towards fitness, people continue to become obese, and perhaps it's no coincidence that the two states that rank at the bottom for obesity are West Virginia and Mississippi, whose rank in terms of education are 46 and 49. Studies shows that education fights obesity (awkwardly phrased but you get the idea, I think). In fact, education seems to have a higher correlation than does income although it does require much more money to shop on the outside of the aisles.

I know Texas is one of the fattest states but I just heard a study that said the average Texan weighs 248 pounds. That's almost unbelievable. Oh, did I mention it's the average Texan football player?

Even McDonald's offers water and side salads/apple slices in lieu of soda and fries with their combo meals. For the same price. McDonald's fries taste really good though.
No one stopped being poor because they saved a dollar by switching to tap water. FWIW the cost per calorie (not item) of crap food makes crap food the smarter buy if your goal is to stay alive. The problem is its so cheap that you can actually get fat on $5.00 per day if you're within striking distance of a dollar store.

It's not for nothing that farmer's markets are considered a yuppie amusement and not integral to the wellbeing of poors. (Poors don't get heirloom tomatoes; they get red ones.)

Regional disposition to obesity would most likely be attributable to regional eating habits and cuisine, right?

I think a lot of Mexicans here get heavy because the Tex-Mex cuisine is so carb heavy.
