As such we crave high calorie, high fat foods, they promoted maximum survival. Also we are conditioned to eat a lot when food was available. Gorging in times of plenty was a good strategy for when the inevitable lean times came, that extra few pounds of fat you put on might make the difference between life and death.
Ok now fast forward to the developed world today. You pretty much can eat as much as you want, any time you want, at virtually no cost at all. Our cravings and tastes haven't changed, but what has gone away is scarcity. As such we're stuck in a continual gorge.
Also, don't under estimate advertising and product placement.
I usually go on 3-4 week backpacking trips each summer. It is AMAZING how food cravings go away when you are not bombarded by an ad on TV every 5 minutes.
I'll be hungry when backpacking, but that's because I'm hiking 10-15 miles a day with a 50 lb pack. But when I'm sitting around camp at night, I'm just relaxing w/ a book or whatever. Eating is not even a part of the thought process. When I'm at home, I park my ass on the couch and scarf down a bag of Doritos while watching The Biggest Loser or whatever.
It really is amazing how much TV plays a role in how much a person eats. That's my experience anyway.
