The bottom line is that carbs are just too damn delicious. What is better than a big bowl of spaghetti with homemade sauce and mushrooms? Or my sister's homemade strawberry shortcake? To deprive ourselves is torture. I'm going to go back to munching on my almonds so I don't get fat.
Fat is alive. It's cells. Those cells need energy to stay alive. If you have more of them, they collectively need more energy. Sure, there's some variability in the baseline metabolisms of people, but for the vast majority of people (absent any particular metabolic diseases), we can estimate the amount of calories we need to within 100-200 per day or so based on age, gender, and weight. As K and I have been losing weight, we've needed to continually decrease the amount of food we eat so that we continue losing at the same pace. Blaming metabolism is nothing more than a convenient excuse for those who don't want to lose weight and who don't care to track what they eat (unless you've been prescribed pills).

If you want some spaghetti or cake, sure, have it. Just make sure you know how much you're having and that it fits in with the rest of the stuff you're eating.

Overeating a meal, a day, a week, isn't going to do anything for you.

Just like dieting a meal, a day, a week isn't going to do anything for you.

People who are super fat are fat because they chronically have consumed far more calories than they needed.

So don't feel bad about having a big high calorie meal every now and then if you're a healthy weight.

If you're a super disgusting fatty, you can still manage to eat the occasional tasty meal provided that it's within the framework of an overall, consistently low calorie diet.

But we're getting way more Health and Fitness science than the thread was intended.

So for the topic of the thread:

Fat people are gross. Fat people with fat children are committing child abuse. Fat people are a huge, unnecessary burden on the health care system. The vast, vast majority of fat people are just lazy and undisciplined and deserved to be shamed for it.

No spaghetti or cake for me. I'm having sushi for dinner. And please don't tell me that's fattening.

It depends on how much you have!

If you favor sashimi and nigiri, it's pretty easy to fill up on a sane number of calories. If you favor deep fried rolls or rolls filled with mayo and cream cheese, it's pretty easy to put away 4k calories for the meal.

For millions of years we lived in a world where food was scarce, starvation was a very real threat, and just getting enough food for yourself and your offspring to survive was a daily struggle.

As such we crave high calorie, high fat foods, they promoted maximum survival. Also we are conditioned to eat a lot when food was available. Gorging in times of plenty was a good strategy for when the inevitable lean times came, that extra few pounds of fat you put on might make the difference between life and death.

Ok now fast forward to the developed world today. You pretty much can eat as much as you want, any time you want, at virtually no cost at all. Our cravings and tastes haven't changed, but what has gone away is scarcity. As such we're stuck in a continual gorge.

Also, don't under estimate advertising and product placement.

I usually go on 3-4 week backpacking trips each summer. It is AMAZING how food cravings go away when you are not bombarded by an ad on TV every 5 minutes.

I'll be hungry when backpacking, but that's because I'm hiking 10-15 miles a day with a 50 lb pack. But when I'm sitting around camp at night, I'm just relaxing w/ a book or whatever. Eating is not even a part of the thought process. When I'm at home, I park my ass on the couch and scarf down a bag of Doritos while watching The Biggest Loser or whatever.

It really is amazing how much TV plays a role in how much a person eats. That's my experience anyway.

Are you saying what and how much you eat is controlled by advertising? There is no personal control?

I picked it up off the streets, took a few years. It's counter-intuitive.

But anybody can do it manually with a little grit and gumption.
