It depends on if someone slips bath salts in to the punch at the 2+2 party.

Seriously though, I agree with everything Busto said. YTF was a guy much like you, except far more obstinate and far worse of a cook. You've got a huge leg up on him because you can make a satisfying, low calorie meal that isn't microwaved salmon slathered with store-bought BBQ sauce (seriously, that was an early staple of his diet). You can follow in YTF's footsteps, learn from his mistakes, and eat better along the way.

Even if you're not that interested in losing weight, spending a week really tracking what you eat -- weighing, measuring, looking up nutrition info on the internet, etc -- could give you a much better perspective about where you are and what changes you might need to make in order to lose weight. You might surprise yourself with the answers -- I know I did. Some of the changes you might find yourself able to make are ones where you eliminate foods you don't find as satisfying but that happen to be high in calories for other foods that are lower in calories but more delicious. And as YTF showed, it's not about being perfect every meal or every day or even every week. It's about being on target for the long term.

Nice post, Gobbo...but you can lose weight if you really want to. You're a good guy and I hope you get healthier. That is, if you want that.

In a normal situation I'd agree with Jimmy's synopsis, and while there is truth to it, his weight issues also can be attributed to a congenital medical condition that affects his thyroid/ endocrine system. He can attain certain degrees of healthiness Dom- by watching his food choices and maintaining mobility-(and he has) but his overall prognosis would only have been bettered by brain surgery. This is something we were mislead on, and never encouraged to follow up on. For this, I failed as his mother. I give him a hell of a lot of credit and am extremely proud of how he's tried and managed to live his life with this situation.

First thing I thought of was the YTF thread. Check it out if you want to lose weight and hopefully it will inspire you. Also, didn't Dids lose like 100 pounds or so very publicly?

It can be done. Just make it your top priority and never stop until you're satisfied. You're still young. I imagine the longer you carry excess weight on your frame the more problems you'll have in your old age wrt your joints. I think people overlook this when deciding if the excess weight is really bothering them or not.

My sister is obese and she said there was a website where you can bet people on your weight loss or something. No idea what it's called but she seemed to think it was neat.

oh, and I applaud any efforts a person makes to become healthier, and more fit.

After turning 50, my fat was becoming an exponential embarrassment and general PITA. I got a second job in a seafood market so I could eat only healthy fish products and get alot of exercise while making money. Best decision I've made in a long time. I've lost 30 lbs since Aug., and feel great.

There's no doubt that obesity correlates to lack of physical activity. Didn't Michael Phelps eat like 20k calories while training?

Modern technology enables to many unhealthy food choices. The recent and growing trend of loading all processed foods down with sugar to increase sales doesn't help obviously as overconsumption of sugar has toxic effects.

I lost 70 lbs in 5 months after a stint in solitary, by walking, lifting, and eating all the fats and proteins I could handle and no carbs(Atkins?).

To me, it's not about being disgusting or whatever, it's about being a burden on society and the people around you.

I look down on fat people, not because they're disgusting (typically sweaty and smelly), but because they don't respect themselves and their own health. I have friends and family who aren't in shape (not obese, but sedentary and overweight). Always, I keep nudging them towards living fitter, out of endearment.
Agree

I don't care if its bad to say. Obese people disgust me. I had to sit next to a shockingly obese lady on a plane once, and I don't think ive ever been more mad at someone who didn't actively do anything bad to me. She was in a scooter in the airport. In line at Burger King. Also had a giant bag of Swedish fish with her on the plane, with her huge thighs and arms spilling on to me in my seat. To be honest, I wanted her to die!

Actually while I'm here maybe I can get some advice. One of my best friends has gained a substantial amount of weight in the past year or so. Hes like 5 6 and weighs 255, and looks horrendous. We played hockey together growing up and he was always in good shape. I feel awful saying it, but I almost don't even want to hang out with him anymore hes so gross. I've tried everything...offering to work out with him, giving him advice on what to eat, anything. But he doesn't change a thing and is still getting fatter. What do you do?

Gather the friends and family for an intervention. Each person should prepare a statement about what the fatty's overeating is doing to them. And obviously refuse to enable his eating in the future.

I went from around 265lb to 195lb in the last year and a half... it was fairly difficult and required a lot of changes. Still not where I want to be and its a daily struggle to keep up the progress. The weight gets harder and harder to take off and muscle doesn't grow as quick as it used to.

That being said...even though I consider my progress a "success story" I think the attitudes some people have towards obese people is literally disgusting. Everyone has their cross to bear and there's absolutely no excuse for that kind of behavior towards others.

Damn that's cold.

About your friend, there is probably nothing you can do. Short of telling him you don't want to be friends with him anymore. Which you probably don't want to do because it sounds mega douchey. So your only option is just stop hanging out with him and have him never know why.

Just nickname him Fatty. That generally works for me.

From my experience (n=1) the only motivation the thusly shamed person feels with this approach is starting a size acceptance tumblr.

Everyone is self conscious about their own weight/appearance, even if they aren't really overweight or unattractive. If you hate "fat" people, you probably just hate something about yourself.
