The only thing is, there's no good colas to be had and that's 'cause they're all made with corn syrup instead of real sugar (when they're not diet). Coke can have as many permutations as they'd like but nothing compares to an ice-cold Coke circa 1965.

I still make due with what there is though. It's that or be cola-less, and the human race wasn't put on this planet to drink uncolas.

Should have clarified. I said all things Foghat. What I meant was I like Zig Zag Walk, In the Mood for Something Rude, and Girls to Chat and Boys to Bounce as much as Fool for the City and all the early stuff. Generally not considered on a par with the best of their stuff (in fact, considered pretty poor), but I like 'em.

The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres (as well as Petticoat Junction) were considered lowest common denominator shows that dumbed down the TV audience that was beginning to take a more sophisticated turn. Most television critics and historians would argue that they fall into the "crappy" category. Nostalgia and ironic acceptance does not erase the fact that theses shows have been consistently lambasted.
You could make the argument that Green Acres is a smarter show, due to it's surrealist tone and a more rapid fire wit than most sitcoms of the time, but a more favorable critical stance would certainly be a revisionist one. Both shows were considered cultural punchlines in their time.

The thread asked for "crappy". That is certainly a subjective veiwpoint. In the case of the TV shows I mentioned, since the majority of the cognoscenti (that I have read, anyway)deem it so, that's the criteria I used. We can argue the value of such arbitrary tastemakers all we want. I might agree with you on many points; obviously I would, as I mentioned my love for the shows above. But that seems somehow counter to the spirit of the thread.

Top Dog makes quality food. I don't think this qualifies as "crappy." They get their sausages from all around the country and it is high quality.

Sucking out on someone for a nutflush or royal flush when I know full well someone's betting into me with a small flush. Or calling a big bet when I suspect the person betting behind me is bluffing off his money. I know I'm acting crappy but raking one of those pots has to be one of the most satisfying moments on a hold'em table.

Agree with 100%. The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres were reactions by sponsors and networks to progressive television shows of the early 1960s like East Side/West Side. The color barrier was beginning to finally be broken, and southern affiliates were unwilling to carry shows that dealt with these and other issues like feminism, so the networks pushed brainless, entertaining rural comedies through the rest of the 60s. Shows like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and All in the Family reversed this in the 70s.

Being a cultural punchline isn't necessarily a bad thing. Hemingway and Faulkner and Poe have been considered something analogous.

Also, I don't think you're grouping these shows together right. Petticoat Junction wasn't anywhere near as good as Green Acres.

I'm afraid we're not going to get away from subjectivity here and it seems beside the point to try.

If they're crappy to you, so be it. But then we are just talking about your personal taste, not about what's crappy.

It seems especially ironic to fault a comedy for not being, what -- serious enough? High minded enough? True, there was no "A Very Special Green Acres" episode. The show never addressed abortion or urban crime or whatever. But Green Acres is just a quality show, period. It's very silly, but so is Monty Python, so are the Pink Panther movie, so was, at what many would consider his best, Woody Allen. That doesn't mean Green Acres is not very sharp, nor not very funny, unless you will it to be so for yourself. Or the "cognoscenti" do, for themselves or you, if you're into that. I'm not content to let matters of taste rest on appeals to authority generally, but certainly not in the case of comedy.
