Objective isn't it? Something aesthetically pleasing. Something that looks badass. Something that looks mental. Something that looks scary/funny/happy/sad. Something that makes you look. Makes you think. Makes you want to see it, I guess is the point.

Someone could look at Metropolis and think nothing of it, someone else will pay 700k for it.

The main thing for me personally that makes a great poster, is one that tells a story. - But that's just me. Art is art init. It's all in the beholders eye.

Leo seems to be interested in random large purchases him and Nicholas Cage got in to a bidding war for a fossil T-Rex skull that cage ended up winning for several hundred thousand dollars. I guess the movie poster makes sense based on his profession, but the T-Rex skull? weird IMO but i guess if u have the disposable income that A list actors have, more power to you.

The most recent Film Comment had a little piece about designer Boris Grinnson (born in Russia, fled the Bolshevik Revolution at age 10, studied art in Estonia, went to Berlin until he had to flee the Nazi wrath after creating a Hitler caricature). Designed over 2000 movie posters in France for 40 years.

Check out his The Postman Always Rings Twice



The composition is very close to the American original, but it's like 10 times more artistic and a million times sexier.

And I highly recommend the documentary Drew: The Man Behind the Poster (it's on Netflix streaming) about Drew Struzan (designed the posters for just about all the big Lucas/Spielberg films and a bunch more) for anyone interested in the subject and process behind the classics.

And lol I sort of remember Angel. Anything with Susan Tyrell and Rory Calhoun, sign me up.

It's soo bad. So bad it crosses that line that makes it unintentionally comical and good.
