Just read "Red Dragon" by Thomas Harris. It's the first in the Hannibal Lecter series.

I found it so insanely well written. The inner dialogue of the main character is incredible.

The fact that I read "The Lost Symbol" by Dan Brown right before this might have me overstating how well written it is though lol.

Yes it's a solid thriller.

New to the forums not sure why I didn't come here years ago. I'm not big into forums and posting more so just reading and them moving on but I do feel there is a lot to learn

Wife bought my The Theory of Poker for Xmas and i've been reading that. Some things in the book are spot. I do think it needs a revision though as the game is always changing but everyone says it's one of those books you gotta read.

Anyone have any thoughts on this book?

David Sklansky is one of my very favorite poker book authors, I'd say. Theory of Poker is seminal.

FYI, dear everyone

The Lost Symbol is the worst book ever written.

I don't usually do goodreads.com reviews, but gd this book was so bad I had to write one.

Unless you want to read a book that has walls of text regarding art and buildings, then this book is for you.

I wasn't saying that, merely trying to be helpful. Lots of discussion of Sklansky and Theory of Poker through the years in that forum that should interest you.

Yes.

I also liked "He particularly hated it when they said his imagery was nonsensical. It made his insect eyes flash like a rocket."

I've been on a great run of books lately -- seems like each one is better than the previous.

You guys were talking up Steinbeck's East of Eden a while ago, and I finally got around to reading it. Phenomenal book. It's hard to find words to say how good I think it is. It's one of those you're in awe of the whole way through, and then it ends (what an ending!) and you just gotta shake your head and throw up your hands at how good it is. Such remarkable, profound character transformations. A lot of times I think biblical references can be kind of pretentious or overwrought, but Steinbeck uses them not just to add grandeur but to explain a very compelling, human story. One of the best books I've had the pleasure to read.

Read it years ago and absolutely loved it. I started devouring everything I could find by Steinbeck after that but this was his masterpiece imo, better than the Grapes of Wrath,

Da Vinci code and lost symbol were ok.

i've been reading Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov the last few weeks, for the second time. It's pretty good stuff.

it's weird, i have been reading his blog for 10+ years while thinking 'i mostly hate this guy'. kinda been interesting to watch his ascent though, and the reading list is his crown jewel imo.

i sent him a tommy angelo article many years ago and he declared it to be '****ing superb' which i appreciated.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I've never read Grapes. Will have to rectify that as soon as possible.

Theodore Sturgeon's novella Some of Your Blood is an homage to Dracula, epistolary format and all. It's a pretty good psychological horror story that takes a while to get going but is sufficiently icky once it does hit its stride. The main character is a backwoods hillbilly sicko who is being treated by an Army shrink. It becomes a sort of fill-in-the-blanks type story with a few nice surprises thrown in.
