My very first choice if I had been picking first. I was a lad of 13 in 1967 and really into movies. So many of these are just super memorable for me. 1967 is THE GREATEST year for movies ever. Not only is there a very strong top end but it also has amazing depth. What leads off 1967's greatness anyway? I guess sometimes having nothing is a real cool hand.

Somehow????? This didn't win best picture and Newman didn't win best actor. It's either lol academy awards or a very strong year, but likely both.

No those Oscars went to In the Heat of the Night with Rod Stieger winning the big prize, and well deservedly

So that amazing to have 2 movies deserving the two big Oscar prizes but could there be a third? HELL YES!!!!! IT'S 1967!!!!!!!!!

A case can be made that this is the best movie ever with a top 5 ever performance. Are you trying to seduce me Mrs. Robinson?

In a normal year Bonnie and Clyde could take all the prizes but this is 67.

There were also a dozen dirty fellows who put together just about the best WWII movie ever.

Those were the biggies but the depth is amazing!

The starpower is amazing
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner So long Mr. Tracy! Also Hepburn and Poitier

Sidney Poitier had a big year with this one, the afforementioned Heat of the Night and To Sir With Love.

Camelot
In Cold Blood
Up the Down Staircase
The Taming of the Shrew
Hombre

On the lighter side Elvis was having a Clambake and suburbia was divorcing and cheating in A Guide for the Married Man and Divorce American Style and superspy James Colburn was In Like Flint.

I also have 3 sentimental favorites. How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying for my money the best/last musical ever made and The Flim Flam Man with con-man George C. Scott and his young apprentice Michael Sarazin. Last but not least The Born Losers a motorcycle gang movie introducing Tom Laughlins Billy Jack character.

1967 is the best year EVER!!!!!
In the Heat of the Night is a superb picture.

I was going to enter this draft but I got cold feet as my film depth is not encyclopaedic.

With that in mind - however, I am suprised that a particular year did not go top 5.

i've been up since yesterday at 2pm and won't be able to hold out much longer.

been trying to stay up till my turn as i have a pretty long write up and don't want to just have busto post my year without it.

once i sleep i'll be out for at least 12-14hrs so will be way past when i'm supposed to post so if anyone can tell me how long i will need to hold out in order to get this in tonight before i pass out that would be appreciated.

He posted that his computer was on the fritz so I think he can be safely skipped. Zeno is notorious for being skipped in these drafts anyway and posting on his own schedule but his contribution is always worth the wait. One thing for sure is his choices will not be mainstream

Zeno said his cpu is busted and to count him out of the draft. He is skipped for eternity. Okay, we will limit it to until this draft is over.

Remember that the draft is offline during midnight hours EST. I said from midnight to 6am. But let's make it from 10pm-8am EST.

You can post your pick during midnight hours if you're on the clock, of course, but you won't be skipped.

so what happens when my fav directors decide to adapt a novel from one of my fav authors?

its one of the greatest films ever made and wins best picture obv.
there are so man things i love about this film.

obv the acting was top notch across the board, the cinematography was superb as is to be expected from a coen/deakins collaboration, but one thing i feel like a lot of my friends didn't even notice when they watched it was the complete lack of a musical score/soundtrack.

everything was just natural sounds. fantastic.

i could write a whole dissertation on NCFOM but this post is going to be waaaaay too long as it is.
i do know a bunch of people who "hated the ending" cuz i guess they didn't like that the protagonist is killed off screen and doesn't get to have a final showdown with the antagonist, but to those people i say two things:

1) talk to mccarthy about that he wrote it. this was probably the most faithful adaptation of a novel ever made (only thing they really changed was leaving out ed tom bell's WWII backstory).

2) gtfo i love how they defy the standard genre expectations of a good vs evil showdown.

just an absolutely fantastic film that i watch numerous times a year and enjoy it just as much every time.

2007 was in my admittedly terrible memory the most stacked year for best picture nominations that i can recall in my lifetime.

IMHO 3 of the 5 nominees would have run away with it had they been nominated any other year and there were a few other pictures that i felt should've been nominated and also would've crushed had they been released another year.

but lets start with another best picture nominee:

DDL gives what i consider the single greatest performance in a film of all time.

i literally sat in the theatre without moving or speaking for a good 5 minutes after the credits had completely rolled in stunned awe at what i had just witnessed.

i had always loved DDL, but this was just on a whole other level.

loved the homage to kubrick in the first 10minutes or so of the film before any dialogue.

i'm not as big of a PTA fanboy as some are (i really liked boogie nights and i liked punch drunk love a decent amount, but wasn't fond of magnolia) but this film just blew me away.
i would've liked to have a billion dollars so i could've bet it all on DDL to win best actor.
there was a better chance of the sun burning out before the oscars were announced then him losing.

next up we have:

anyone who knows me knows how much i love the gilroy brothers, and this movie ranks right up there on my list of all time favs.
i honestly can't think of a single aspect of this film i didn't love.

as good as the entire cast is, tom wilkinson just steals every scene he's in and gives a true tour de force performance.

the next film on my list is exactly what i look for in a movie.
great acting, great directing, superb cast, absolutely captivating story and just edge of your seat thrill ride the whole way through.

i've always loved casey affleck but who knew his brother would turn out to be such a great director?

and i mean any movie with ed harris and titus welliver? yes please.

before i saw this next film i was 100% convinced that no one could make blood meridian besides the coens.
after i saw this movie i am 100% convinced that no one can make blood meridian but andrew dominik.

the way this movie was filmed was just beyond description. i could say things like majestic, hypnotic, genius, mesmerizing, but none of them due it justice.

the opening train robbery was etherial.
the pacing and framing of every scene was masterful.

i could watch this movie a million times and still marvel at the sheer beauty of it.

then you add in an unbelievable cast (comprised of a ton of incredible actors 99% of the population most likely couldn't name to save their lives) and the fact that i'm a huge sucker for westerns and you get one of my fav films of all times.
put a gun to my head i have a hard time choosing between this and unforgiven for my all time fav western. thankfully no one is ever gonna do that and i can just love them both with all my heart.

i don't think i could've picked a year that didn't have a film directed by one of my top 5 directors.
i just ****ing love this guy.
not only does he make movies that seem tailored to my exact tastes, but he's absolutely hilarious (do yourself a favor and watch some of the extras on his films where he's doing commentary) and obv insanely smart.

the visual and musical tones he creates in his films just pull you in and let you know this is a godamn david fincher film.
JG and mark ruffalo were so great too. there was one exchange that just kills me every time i see it.

JG and MR are meeting outside the SF library i believe to go over facts from the case. JG is telling MR about a girl who had an encounter with the prime suspect and he's telling the story of the time they met and i'm going to paraphrase this but the gist of it was:

JG: so she goes to a painting party and he's there
MR: whats a painting party?
JG: its a party where people come over and help you paint.
MR: sounds like an awful party.

it doesn't translate that well when written, but man ruffalo kills the timing/delivery and it gets a really solid LOL from me every time i watch it.

ok i still have a bunch more films to mention but i'm not going to do posters and full on write ups for them all in the interest of everyone's sanity so i'll conclude the visual portion of my write up with the following.

while it certainly doesn't compete with the previous films in terms of gravitas if you know me you know i couldn't pick this year and not include this right up near the top, because well godamnit I FREAKING LOVE THESE MOVIES and have seen them close to a hundred times.
its gotten to the point where my fiance won't even watch em with me unless i swear to not say each line a fraction of a second before the character says it on screen.

the second submission from my 2nd fav film making siblings:

i don't even need to do a write up on this cuz ya'll know how i feel.
GOAT film series ever.

ok now a brief list of the rest of the films from this year that made this, for me, the goat year for cinema and the library from which i would pluck my companions for my banishment to a deserted island.

since i've been on a serious note so far lets move to the comedies to lighten the mood.

while i thought it was pretty ridic that this film was nominated for best picture i did enjoy it quite a bit and its def a great film.
just not compared to the field of films that it was up against.

but juno was a fun, clever, entertaining movie that didn't fall into the normal cliche pratfalls i come to expect from this genre.
the cast was really fantastic and i just love j.k simmons so much.

next up we have 2 hilarious comedies both with seth rogan, go figure.

knocked up and superbad both make me LOL every time i see them even tho i know whats about to happen.
neither are groundbreaking comedies like dumb and dumber or ace ventura, but wtf they're awesome and if you don't like them you prolly take life too seriously.

another great comedy that i don't think gets enough love:

hot rod.
i mean ffs it has ian mcshane in it what more do you need?

smiley face is right up there with half baked as one of the best stoner movies ever, and reno 911!: miami is always good for a laugh, stoned or not your choice.

walk hard: the dewey cox story was pretty much the perfect parody of every musical biopic ever made. beneath the silliness they really nailed it.
i'm not really a big fan of john c reilly but i thought he was great in this film.

aqua teen hunger force colon movie wasn't as good as the show, but it was still freaking hilarious.

and the heartbreak kid was a pretty solid effort from the ferrelly bros who hadn't had a good film in a number of years.

ok now back to more serious films:

i thought lars and the real girl was a really unique and interesting film.
almost like a prequel to "her" it easily could've been played for laughs and been dumb/trite but it was played with such honesty and tenderness that you really were able to empathize and almost root for this really messed up character.
ryan gosling was tremendous in it and he'll be featured in another of my fav films from this year.

well **** might as well get right to it then:

fracture, with gosling and anthony hopkins was a great classic thriller with a pretty basic story but executed to perfection.
hopkins is expectedly awesome as always, but i was really surprised by goslings acting chops and ability to hang with hopkins in every scene.

there was nothing really spectacular about the film, but it didn't try and do more then it could and what it set out to do it achieved remarkably well.
i highly recommend everyone check it out.
even knowing what the twist is at the end i still enjoy it tremendously.

two more westerns that were not remarkable in anyway but very enjoyable:

seraphim falls and 3:10 to yuma.

a couple of movies that flew under the radar for many people i've talked to were:

the lookout with JGL and eastern promises with viggio and ed harris (god i love ed harris)
both had a nice dark edge to them and while certainly wouldn't have made this a year to select on their own, def deserve a mention and a watch.

the most twisted movie of the year def goes to lumet's before the devil knows you're dead.
this one had an almost coen-esque feel to it, and its hard to go wrong with PSH, ethan hawke, and maris tomei doing nudity!

another film i enjoyed quite a bit with PSH (despite not being a huge fan of julia roberts) was charlie wilson's war which i'm sure most of you have seen so i don't need to say much about.

hopefully you all got a chance to see in the valley of elah with tommy lee jones, as it was a very powerful and moving film based on actual events.
i don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't had the chance to see it, but its tommy lee jones doing what tommy lee jones does best, so watch it.

another adaptation of a book that i quite enjoyed in 2007 was into the wild.
again i don't feel the need to talk in depth about this as i'm sure everyone has seen it, but i will say when i first saw it i was pretty stoked that the first song i ever learned to play on guitar (angels from montgomery) was chosen to be the song that chick sings in the hippie community talent show or whatever it was.

after punch drunk love it shouldn't have surprised me that adam sandler would be great in a non-comedic role, and so guess what? i wasn't surprised when he was great in reign over me as a man dealing with the loss of his family after 9/11.
and the movie did a good job of steering away from sappiness or self-congratulations on overcoming hardship which would've ruined it for me.

and who could forget alpha dog, another super horrific true story that was really well adapted to the screen with a break out performance by ben foster (god i love ben foster, who by the way was far and away the best character in 3:10 to yuma) and great performances by the rest of the relatively unknown cast.
when i first saw the film i had never heard about the story and man what a brutal ****ed up story it was.
cassevettes really did it justice tho, great film.

ok this post is way longer then it should be i apologize, i'll wrap it up by just listing the other films from 2007 that made my list of notables and led me to snap choose this as my fav year.

american gangster
the diving bell and the butterfly
the kingdom
smoking aces
sunshine
Yodas Butler is on the clock. I will PM him.

only thing i disagreed with was into the wild which is awful.

that year also has hot fuzz, darjeeling, and 28 weeks later

it had two amazing chinese documentaries with nanking and please vote for me (live this movie its a hilarious watch and only 45 minutes or so on youtube)

it also has one of my favorite foreign films of all time: pans labyrinth.

1993

Like others I'm picking the year that I first got in to films, and one film in particular was a major influence.

13 years old, first cinema trip without parents, and theres a ****ing Brachiosaurus strolling across the 70 x 30 screen. This film has naturally slipped down my top films ever list, at 13 years old how great a film looked was all I really cared about. This film still looks great. it will be a special film for me forever.

Cool Runnings – One of Candys greats. The ultimate feel good film. And a true story. I know of no one that doesn't love this film. 13 years old, 34 years old, I love this film.

Groundhog Day - Bill at his best. A film thats stood the test of time, and gets better every time.

The Night Before Christmas – My favourite Xmas movie to this day. True Burton crazyness.

Dazed and Confused – The reason I still call shot-gun 21 years later.

True Romance - One of the greatest love stories ever told. In QT's top 3 easy.

Dragon: Bruce Lee Story - A really good, really moving film about what is possible if you really believe.

Demolition man - OK not a great! But when I was 13 I loved it!

Looking back, there where a lot of greats that year, but these are the ones I saw at 13, and they stayed with me.

1993 great films seen since:

Menace to Society - Brutal.

Whats eating Gilbert Grape - Hi Leo! A star is born.

The Piano - A lovely film, people seem to love or hate it. I think its a master piece.

Shindler’s List - Not much to say about this, Spielberg gets his oscar in what will be his most emotional film.

Tombstone - Val Kilmer gives IMO his best ever performance as Doc Holliday

Carlito’s Way - Under rated. Al Pacino and especially Sean Penn both give great performances.

A Bronx Tale - A proper gangster film.

Alive - True film that shows what humans will do to survive.

Three Colors Blue- The start of the best trilogy ever made.

Falling Down - If you can't associate with this film, you're living to well, or you haven't lived enough.

Grumpy Old Men - Very very funny.

Searching For Bobby Fisher - Inspiring, great film.

In The Line of Fire - One of Clints best, often over looked.

Dave - Under rated, pretty funny film.

- Sorry this is a bit weak in terms of effort - But I'm aware I'm holding up proceedings, and time is tight.
