Damn, Dom, you keep riding roughshod over my late round picks. Highly recommend The Pretenders' version of "Creep" and "In the Deep Midwinter" with The Blind Boys of Alabama.

Phat Mack, that Hako Yamasaki is quite an interesting pick. Even after living in Texas, I'm struggling to see how that happened.

Chrissie Hynde and Jim Morrison are two singers I've never been able to listen to.

Stevie Nicks lasting this long is incredibly surprising. I think part of it is that her singing ability as of now is not quite as great as she was when she was at her peak. She has stated that she protects her voice by not trying to sing like she did in her 20s and 30s.

For peak Nicks, here's a live performance of hers:

Outside of peak Mariah Carey, I consider Whitney Houston the best female pop vocalist in history. Every note is clear and it never seems she's struggling or forcing anything. Truly fantastic.

Jim Morrison singing the way he did despite being on coke 24/7 is impressive. Hell being alive for as long as he was is a feat in itself. Here's "Light My Fire" live on The Ed Sullivan Show.

I like the acoustic version of "Black Hole Sun" because it allows Cornell's to take center stage and not be drowned by the pomp of a rock concert.

Morrison definitely weakest of the four.

But how could you think Whitney Houston has a meh voice?

She had a fine voice that was used on crap songs. So I have a "meh" reaction.

I may have to go 20 picks just to set you guys straight on some things. Maybe I'll just post an addendum after we're through...

Pick 12

I first heard of Faye Wong the singer in the early 90s. I discovered Faye Wong the actress in the mid 90s. I finally figured out that they were the same person ~2010.

She was instrumental in putting A-Pop on the map, but whether it was her voice, or her unrelenting, unrepentant habit of telling organizations and governments to **** off, I don't know.

Spoiler:

Covering The Cranberries.

Covering Tori Amos in a duet with Sandy Lam. Faye is the first voice. I'm posting it this way because I'm worried that I won't have room to pick Sandy later.

Team SuperUberBob selects:

Spoiler:

Spoiler:
Björk

Personally, I think this song shows off her voice best:

Her eccentric personality and experimental style has allowed her to mostly slide under the mainstream radar but she has an extremely dedicated fanbase.

Okay, I'm going with Hope Sandoval because she's cute. And because whether she's with Mazzy Star, The Warm Inventions, or Massive attack, she sounds great.

Round 12

Little Richard

This goes into my 50's rocker category. This guy is awesome and hits those high notes like nobodys business. Maybe the inventor of the rock 'n roll OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO and he does it better than anyone. He was very influential on future rockers. This guy can wail!

so far:

Frankie Valli
Karen Carpenter
Frank Gorshin
James Earl Jones
The Hollies - harmony
Roy Orbison
Neil Young
Joni Mitchell
Freddie Mercury
Groucho Marx
Debbie Harry
Little Richard

Round 13

Buddy Holly

Sticking with the 50's. I love this guy! Lets put him in my died too soon category. Brilliant rocker short before he probably even reached his prime. He can flat out rock and sing. I love way he contorts his voice 4 different ways in Peggy Sue. But he sing soft and pretty like in True Love Ways. One of my all-time favorites.

I have a playlist for special people whenever I have them captive in my car. It's simply entitled "Annoying," which is really a collection of songs I love but others have no great fondness for. This one in particular brings me back to my youth. And Paul Rodgers did a few other things too.

And a little change of pace:

Round 13:

Another Country Angel...

Spoiler:
Kelly Willis

In the 90s, you can thank Kelly Willis for jump-starting the alt-country movement, as well as bridging the divide between traditional country music and the more alternative, modern acts.

I've seen her 3 times and her voice live is astounding. Willis might actually have my all-time favorite singing voice.

Round 14 pick is a homage to all the great monster roars, usually just before they mash up something or someone or some other monster. None of this wimpy monologue gibberish for roaring beasts of destruction; monsters have no pretense. Godzilla, the God of all Monsters, does the stand in roar:

Howlin Wolf
Mae West
Keith Jackson
Koko Taylor
Norah Jones
