This guy amazes me. Starts out as a new wave/punk brat, segues into beautiful pop songs, then he becomes a jazz performer, and finally, he creates classical music. Always loved his voice in all iterations. Seems to be mostly forgotten now, but, man, is he great. I always thought that if I could sing, I'd want to sing like Joe Jackson.

I was sure Ronstadt would be one of the first3 or 4 picked. I didn't pick her first because it was too obvious. I realized at #10 there was a chance of an injustice being done, so I went ahead and grabbed her.

Others I was sure would be 1st rounders: Mel Blanc, Freddie Mercury, James Earl Jones, Maria Callas (my 1st snipe), Joe Jackson. There are at least three more whose omission surprises me.

I leave you with Joe, and some other guy...

Pick #10

My favorite male interpreter of the Great American Songbook;

A man whose singing was ridiculed and dismissed in his own lifetime;

A man whose voice is still dismissed to this day;

A member of the "I like it when I can understand the words" Club;

I give you the great...

Spoiler:
Fred Astaire

A 1950's jazz interpretation of a classic from his earlier years.

Foghorn Leghorn
Ella Fitzgerald
Nigel Planer
Jocko Henderson
Bobby McFerrin
Janis Joplin
Delbert McClinton
W.C. Fields
Linda Ronstadt
Fred Astaire

Fred Astaire was my next pick. Ugh!

Since Phat stole Fred Astaire, I'm going with Brittany Howard.

And even though she only does one verse here, it's a knockout, and she's in pretty good company:

Round 10

Groucho Marx

Time for another speaking voice and what better than Groucho! This goes into my comedic voice category. Groucho was the king of one liners. Was it the wit, the delivery, the voice? YES! Grouchos voice is instantly recognizable and needs to be included in this draft.

so far:

Frankie Valli
Karen Carpenter
Frank Gorshin
James Earl Jones
The Hollies - harmony
Roy Orbison
Neil Young
Joni Mitchell
Freddie Mercury
Groucho Marx

Round 11

Debbie Harry

One way or another I knew I would make this pick. Ms. Harry goes into my female rock/punk/pop/disco singer category. Great range, versatility and energy, a true vocal performer.

I never understood the bad rap on Astaires voice? He sang those songs beautifully and his voice always seemed to match the mood, style and purpose of them perfectly.

It is the way these drafts always go Some HUGE elephants in the room that are so obvious that people don't want to take them. I definitely fall into this category and usually stick more to personal favorites rather than critical acclaim or the ambiguous "draft value".

Especially with this small group. I could be content with a list made from yours and Phat Mack's choices. I'm only surprised no one has selected a really peculiar voice yet. I have enjoyed listening to all the picks here.

I like listening to everyones picks as there were more than a few I was unfamiliar with. One thing I really like about these drafts is getting exposed to other tastes and finding stuff I like that I didn't know about.

Just realized that Is She Really Going Out with Him was released in 1979, which makes me feel weird since I categorize Joe Jackson as one of the best new singers.

Re: unusual picks, that's pretty much how I play these drafts -- I'm trying to introduce new stuff in case anyone out there is weird enough to enjoy them. One thing I've noticed this time is that it may be hard to find video/audio files for certain people, which has constrained some of the stuff I want to post.

If there's one song and one singer that gives me the chills, especially in these times, then they are these two American treasures. I'm not a religious man, but there's a measure of the Divine at work here. Do I overstate? Very well, I overstate:

I'm going to be out of pocket for a little while, so I will go ahead and post.

Pick #11

Here we go back to the 70's, and in the 70's we go to the psychedelic movement, and in the psychedelic movement we go to Folk Psychedelic.

She was never known in the States, but she had a small and devoted following in the People's Republic of Texas. I have no idea what her reputation in Japan is -- I do know that she still performs. She would probably be surprised to hear that she was a hero to the cosmic psychedelicos of the SW, or that there even was such a thing.

She is...

Spoiler:
Hako Yamasaki

(Her last name is sometimes romanized as Yamazaki.)

Trigger Warning: Dark Weirdness.

Trigger Warning: Neither Folk nor Psychedelic.

I think Dom's up.

**** guys couldn't keep to telling the person who's next by PM.

On phone now so no vids yet but I'm choosing Stevie Nicks, Whitney Houston, Jim Morrison and Chris Cornell for my four missed picks.

ROUND 11:

One of the best rock voices in the biz...

Spoiler:
Chrissie Hynde

I think of Hynde as the female Bon Scott - her vocals just emanate sex. You hear it once and you will never mistake it for another voice, ever.

The whole first album by The Pretenders is a rock masterpiece - I could've just posted that here, instead. One of the main reasons it's a classic is because of two things: Hynde's songwriting talent and her astonishing vocals.

*******************

Dom's Picks:

TOM JONES
BON SCOTT
ALLISON KRAUSS
SADE
BETH GIBBONS
PAUL BUCHANAN
HANNA REID
EMMYLOU HARRIS
TIFT MERRITT
JOE JACKSON
CHRISSIE HYNDE
