Then don't watch it, and stop tacitly insulting those of us who do. Read a book, listen to some music, meditate. Anything to keep from harping about how much better the shows you like are better than the shows others like.

I think every comedy on CBS is terrible, while NBC has gotten them right more often then not and FOX is doing ok recently. I think the show is absolutely terrible compared to just about everything else mentioned ITT and it's appalling you defend it then mention shows like AD, Seinfeld and The Wire in the same post.
|
If that is what truly tips your sense of what's appalling, then you have deeper issues than sitcom envy.
Frankly, I don't have the time to watch every show on every network and make that call. Nor would I consider it possible, unless maybe you do it for a living. One of the real differences between TV shows and movies or records or books is that they are constantly evolving while they are being consumed. One time seeing a movie, and, as a rule, you have a grip on it. Seeing the first few shows of, say Seinfeld, and a few shows in the fifth season, and the difference in quality is enormous.

The fact is that it's not even trying to be. It's a broad comedy on CBS that aims for mass viewers and easy laughs. It's not trying to win the same critical appeal given to other shows mentioned ITT.
|
Those are almost the exact words I used to describe the show, although this statement runs counter to the one you made about how the show tried to "represent itself"; that statement made the exact opposite point of the one you make here, about what the show "didn't try to be". At any rate, as I mentioned, such factors (as you cite) do not preclude a show from being one of the better shows. It is possible to achieve commercial and aesthetic success.
Words I didn't use included utterly contrived BS statements about it's demographic and how it presented itself, in a clearly uninformed attempt to make a point about how my personal preferences are more aesthetically "correct" than others.

You won't agree, you'll write another essay on how amazing it is and how TBBT hasn't mastered the condescending comedy that you and 30 rock clearly have in supply.
|
No, I don't agree, but I'm not the one who insisted on injecting negative opinion into a thread, just because I didn't like a show others did. And doing so by tossing bull**** about and calling it "fact".
Amazing how some seemingly bright guy thinks a reply that consists of less wording than the average newspaper article constitutes "an essay", and gets pissed when someone expends a little energy and thought into defending their point. But, if that is how you feel, I suggest you avoid any future essayism by putting me on ignore.
Go ahead. I promise, it won't bother me a bit.

Think about it, nut....you know how Blarg would sometime drive us so nuts that some of us had to fight the urge to crawl through the modem and throttle him, but now that he's gone, we see how much he really contributed...?
Same principle.

Big Bang Theory is a pretty damn good comedy imo, and some of you are underrating the cleverness in some of the ideas (cleverness which translates to damn funny).

Yeah. Bad juju to speak ill of the departed.
Still, I always thought Sheldon=Blarg.
Edit: I always thought their accepting friendship for Sheldon, as he is, was one of the things that gave the show it's warmth.

Yeah, call me crazy, but I like my comedies to be funny. Just a quirk I have.

Re: Best TV series out atm
Kud are you a writer on the show? Stop PMSing, you like TBBT, great! I happen to think it's awful. I've also seen my fair share of episodes so I'm pretty sure I'm well informed enough to make my own opinion on it rather that what I just "assume"

"[Your] own" opinion doesn't mean it's an enlightened one. Your exposition of it certainly wasn't.
I normally give everyone who posts here benefit of the doubt, but, in this case, I'm hesitant. Unless you have "wasted" a tremendous amount of time watching said show. There have been roughly 80-85 episodes of this particular show, or about 30 hours worth. Unless you are a critic paid to do so, why would anyone spend more than an hour or so (which is a mere three episodes, less if you have to sit through commercials) watching something they dislike so vociferously. You do it just to load up on bile?
You've seen a few episodes, probably, and don't like them. For all I know, you watched the first 10 or so shows waiting for it to get better. Hell, I wouldn't have watched it that long; as mentioned, the first season (or at least the first half or so)was unsteady and only mildly funny, no great shakes. At any rate, you may think you have seen enough to have a quality opinion, but I doubt you have.
Not just you, actually. Like I said, a TV show is a constantly evolving thing. And, has been mentioned, there is something to be said for only truly being able to appreciate the show after it's run. In the long run, maybe I will think TBBT was overrated, or simply stale, like I feel about a few shows, that I used to love, now.
Several of the shows mentioned here, I have seen a few episodes, and I don't care for them. But I'm not going to trash those shows; I simply haven't seen enough to form a credible opinion; why waste time watching something I don't like?
Doesn't matter, though. You may have seen every episode; I don't see any real ability to discern aesthetic quality, only to call out and insult based on personal resonance. Mainly, you seem to just point and laugh. At least based on this post and exchange.
You don't like the show? Fine. Tell me why, don't just call it "lame" and leave it. Especially in a thread that had been free from such negativity.
Actually, no one else had made any negative comments ITT, until kioshk chimed in on the show after reading I liked it. Which is just kisohk being kioshk. You and your buddy, though, took it upon yourself to pile on, which is fine. It is a public forum, and all opinions are welcome. Some are worthy of further exploration. But when someone answer your insults and empty rhetoric with a reasoned analysis and a little impassioned verbage, don't start whining about "PMSing".
My issue is not that you must appreciate the show as I do; your opinion doesn't mean anything to me. But your entry into this thread wasn't to contribute a show, or even comment constructively on someone else's pick; it was insulting conjecture, pure and simple. Calling something "lame" with no real back up or analysis, just a random insult, is simply bad (but revealing) form.
Still, if you don't wish to hear anymore, either use you "ignore" feature, or run back to one of the other forums. I assure you neither will cause me any real duress.
Sheldon=Blarg=increasingly Kudzu, I'm afraid.
Lord, I gotta think about switching to decaf.

Haha you can think what you want to think. I'm not going to have a debate with you about how many episodes of TBBT I have or haven't seen. Some of my friends like it, I also had to do research into sitcoms for a paper I was writing and one of the many I chose to research happened to be TBBT.
Your assumption is what? Anyone who's watched more than a few episodes of this show simply CAN'T dislike it the way I do, It's simply impossible! Therefore I must be lying. Also I came in here to post Breaking Bad not to hate on TBBT, just as I'm sure your intention wasn't to post several long winded rambling posts. But here we are.

Re: Best TV series out atm
I am not a fan of the big bang theory, but I think kudzu is right here. He is merely defending a show he likes. I guess people here would prefer if he would just write "I like The Big Bang Theory, haters gonna hate" instead of his thoughtful entries. I like the long winded entries.
My wife and I just started watching 30 Rock this weekend and I have to say, the show is great (at least the first half of the first season). Looking forward to more episodes.

Okay. Fair enough. I take you at your word. Still don't know specifics, but alright.

No. You can dislike anything you want. Like I said, I do. But that doesn't mean you are qualified to make an objective critique of something, just that you don't like it. And frankly, for a variety of reasons, I still don't think you're qualified.

Heh. It is rarely my intention. It's almost always the result.
So tell me...why is Breaking Bad so awesome?

Re: Best TV series out atm
AND THE CO-WINNERS
BBC AND BBC AMERICA
DOCTOR WHO
AND
TORCHWOOD.
Honestly Doctor Who and Torchwood have been the best shows on television for the Last 5 years...
Eccelson, Tennant, and Smith are and were AMAZING doctors..
And Captain Jack Harkness with his invinicblilty and bisexual gayness is problably the best television character going today.
You can say whatever you want but both shows are amazing and
Torchwood is GROUNDBREAKING.
