Ask Me About Being a Homeless, Vagabond Filmmaker

Hey everyone,

So I'm at Dom's this week helping him with some pre-production stuff on a film he's going to direct, so I figured I'd do this now.

As some of you might know, I just finished a little project called A Year Without Rent, where I spent a year living out of my car, sleeping on couches, traveling the country and volunteering on indie films of all shapes and sizes.

I traveled over 40k miles, as far west as LA and as far east as Berlin, and worked on films with budgets ranging from $500 to $500K (ish).

So...who's got questions? I'll check in in-between meetings and stuff.

Who was the best group of people you got to work with?
Which project do you think will be the most successful?
Who lent you the best bed?

Lol this should be good.

What's the worst role you had to do?

Were you solvent at the time or did you have to find ways to make money?

I did a Kickstarter campaign to fund it.

On the 3rd film, I was a PA on this film on an island off the coast of Maine. In March. We had a day where it was 20 degrees with 20 mph wind off the water and freezing rain. We were outside for 13 hours. I hadn't bought boots yet. It was brutal.

1. That's tricky. So many cool people. The people in Berlin were great. Did 2 films with a group in Seattle I really liked. And the crew for Brea Grant's film was great.

2. Probably Matthew Lillard's FAT KID RULES THE WORLD, which won an audience award at sxsw. Oh, and they'll be on the warped tour

3. A bed outside Denver made out of memory foam.

Not being an ******* to the crew is a pretty great quality.

Does it make you any better at acting? No. But you become someone people want to work with, which in turn gives you access to roles that can help you stretch and grow as an actor.

This seems like a really biased question.

Well, it helps if you're insane. And stubborn.

Maybe? My schedule is pretty full at the moment. What did you have in mind?
