I'm 29 and I've been playing since I was 18, starting online and then moving to live. Poker has caused some issues in my life that my family is aware of: though I graduated college, it took 6 years rather than 4 since I prioritized poker too much for my first 2 years. Some of my extended family is aware of that too. My dad doesn't have too much of an issue w/ poker. My mom did at first and still does but she isn't as negative of it as before. She's called poker a sin and waste of time. She's also a big talker (can't keep a secret), telling everyone she knows about what my siblings and I are up to.

I still haven't told anyone in my family about the BBJ. Given the info I gave, would you guys tell your fam if you were in my shoes? I'm pretty close to my fam and feel slightly bad keeping a secret from them...
I will call you later.

Surely proof that his original decision was correct?

It seems like you are underestimating what your tax liability is about to be. I know someone who also hit a bbj in mid April and writing off a good % with gambling losses takes time

It should be ~30% give or take 5%, and that's before writing off any gambling losses. Why do you think I'm underestimating it?

Also, thanks for the input all, I've decided to continue keeping it a secret from the fam.

No offense, but I don't get why at 29 you would feel bad. You are your own man, out on your own earning a living.

Hard to know for sure because much of the grief he had to deal with after being outed was related to keeping it a secret to begin with. Catch-22 is a thing

wait for an opportune moment to bring it up off hand, that is GTO.

As a general life rule, never tell anybody anything unless A) you're already doing it/got it done (like life plans etc.), B) it's immediately life-changing, or C) it affects the life of the person you're telling in some meaningful way.

For example, if you tell your best friend you're going to open a business, it's probably +EV to just stfu and do it. You might hear a lot of negativity like, "you know, the majority of businesses fail when they start up Caveat in this example is if your friend is already and entrepeneur and you're seeking info/strategic advice. Then it makes sense to tell him/her.

Depends on how close you are with family. Me and my family are really close so I'd help them out and maybe give them some

Dude, I wouldn't even tell my wife. Okay, maybe I'd tell her I hit like $10k or something like that so we could pay off a car note and what not but the rest I'd stash away for an emergency or invest for later on life. Be smart about it, get yourself debt free, bulk up your savings account a little bit, and then make a couple of smart easy investments.
