Well having not really ever being able to, I'm unsure, but for starters something similar to 4th July, a national holiday and parades, lavish over excessive food and drink, parades and fairs, that kinda of thing I guess.

At the minute we don't really do anything.

i don't really mean how we should celebrate, but why. in the USA they celebrate the 4th of july because it's a historic day of independence, of liberation, of the birth of a nation (maybe some people just do it cos they like fireworks, but that's the idea at least). i really don't know why we ought to be celebrating.

yep, it's the fact that we do absolutely nothing that's annoying.

Even the appearance of a St Georges flag on a building is met with mumblings about racism etc.

Every year there are a few stories about people campaigning for it to be a national holiday, and whilst that would be great - I'd need tomorrow off as well to recover from the monumental hangover.

Plus, if we had a huge holiday with street parties and widespread drunkeness, it would soon turn into a scrap amongst the chavs in the streets.

it's simply a holiday to celebrate our identity as English, St.George is our patron Saint, we bare his cross on our national flag and England and St.George are forever associated as a result, celebreate because we love our country and we love being English.

That's my take anyhow

Just to be clear, the rumblings of racism aren't by and large from ethinic minorities. They are fine with it. It's from the tree-hugging, soap-dodging, deodorant-spurning, namby-pamby, wishy-washy, hoity-toity bleeding heart political-correctness police whiteys we all know and hate who equate the display of a national flag to being akin to goosestepping down the highstreet with a swastika tee-shirt on.

Plus, we're not big on celebrating without a good reason. It being a certain day is not a good reason (except Christmas). Winning the European Cup would be a good reason, for example.

To be clear.

Go and dip your toe in the sea off the coast of Aberdeen and then come back and ask. It's a wee bit chilly.

I also honour the women of England, for England has produced great women as well as great men. Here is the speech given by Elizabeth the First to our troops and sailors, knowing invasion by the Spanish Armada was imminent.

I am come amongst you at this time, not as for my recreation or sport, but being resolved, in the midst and heat of the battle, to live or die amongst you all; to lay down, for my God, and for my kingdom, and for my people, my honour and my blood, even the dust.

I know I have but the body of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart of a king, and of a king of England, too; and think foul scorn that Parma or Spain, or any prince of Europe, should dare to invade the borders of my realms: to which, rather than any dishonour should grow by me, I myself will take up arms; I myself will be your general, judge, and rewarder of every one of your virtues in the field.

I know already, by your forwardness, that you have deserved rewards and crowns; and we do assure you, on the word of a prince, they shall be duly paid you. In the mean my lieutenant general shall be in my stead, than whom never prince commanded a more noble and worthy subject; not doubting by your obedience to my general, by your concord in the camp, and by your valour in the field, we shall shortly have a famous victory over the enemies of my God, of my kingdom, and of my people.

Even better than Churchill imo, shame our current monarchy is not so inspirational

St.George "wat miracle did he do"?

I believe the "miracle" was: 'Gave his life for his beliefs in the Son of God by an act of direct disobedience to the state'.

The state, as I recall, was the Roman Empire, before Constantine and George a high ranking military officer.

Kinda like if Collin Powell had been killed by then president George Bush instead of lying for him at the U.N., sorta.

Sorry if I offended "yank" but still do not pray to a n y Saints for forgiveness not even Sainta Clause, eh, lol.

St. George is the official Patron Sainte of Canada too, btw.
