Please excuse the real advice...I do all nighters for work once every couple of months, couple of things I try to do if I know one is coming...
1. Sleep in the previous day or catch even a 30-1hr nap day of
2. Don't eat anything heavy, keep dinner light and have some light snacks to eat to keep you busy, being a little hungry helps (I do sunflower seeds)
3. I try not to drink caffeine until around 11pm or midnight, then I do a 5 hour energy
4. I keep the room cold and do about 2-3 minutes of pushups/jumping jacks every hour or so as needed
Combo of all of that usually keeps me ok until about 5am, then it is just willpower till morning.
When I do this I normally catch a second wind in the morning and am good till about lunch then crash hard early afternoon.
I think most of this is really different from person to person.
ritalin/adderall/dexedrine is definitely the way to go.
when i was in university, i never went to class and never studied... so when i had a mid-term or a final, i would take one of these and study for like 30 straight hours and pass the class. it would have been impossible without them. they keep you up, you don't get tired and you're still pretty alert... and you're actually able to study and remember things.
the people who attempted to stay up all night with just coffee or red bull tended to fail miserably. when you're super tired, you just can't absorb the information and you're not in any condition to perform well during the test the next day. whereas with the ADD drugs, you're still in a bit of haze by the next morning, but you're able to read and comprehend things pretty well.
tips: eat lots before you take them because they kill your apatite (and maybe have some food on hand that you really enjoy eating because you're not really gonna feel like eating, especially if it's food you don't really enjoy anyway). drink lots of water because they dry your mouth out (you'll end up taking a piss every hour though too because of all the water). and when you're finally ready to go to bed, smoke some weed and/or have a few beers to calm yourself down... especially if you've taken a lot of milligrams of the stuff over the last little while, it can be hard to get to sleep even if you've been up for a long time. if you're trying to stay up all night, i recommend the time release ones.
ironically, i majored in psychology where they tell you that it's good idea to give these drugs to kids... which i think is pretty crazy. they do crack you out a little bit... and i've heard that some of these kids are taking 60 milagrams of the stuff every day which is absolutely crazy. they do turn you into a bit of a zombie... but you are able to sit there for hours and read hundreds of pages of a textbook without getting board or distracted.
oh ya, another tip is to not let yourself get distracted. they're great at allowing you to focus on your task at hand... so if you start focusing on something else, like if you take a break to surf the internet... you can waste a lot of time focusing on the wrong stuff.
if you're taking them just to study for a while... 10 miligrams is probably fine. if you're trying to stay up all night.. take a 15 or 20 miligram time release pill every 6 to 8 hours... and you probably don't want to take more than 60 miligrams in total. if you take one pill at midnight... and the next one around 6am or 8am, that should be enough.
