McClellan AFB was an AFLC Depot base, which meant certain types of airplanes went there to get complete overhauls/shakedown cruises every 4 to 5 years. One of McClellan's assigned responsibilities was F-111's, one of the last manually-steered jet fighters, they had gotten to the point that these supersonic f**kers were too quick too handle properly, and began to be phased out by f-14's, f-15's, F-16's, and A-10's in the early 80's.
I mentioned shakedown cruise, right? for airplanes, it's called a functional check flight [FCF]. The squadron next door to us handled those. Anyway, it was not uncommon for an F-111 up doing an FCF to have a stuck/hung landing gear [which was easily manually overridden.
But this ONE time... I'm in one of those bread trucks [they shuttled us from plane to plane in these things, all painted Air Superiority Blue, a shade lighter than Navy Blue] and Job Control calls in on the radio. Job Control is a bunch of senior enlisted f**kups who maintain status on all aircraft parked on the tarmac [maintenance/ full tank of jet fuel status, etc.]. Job Control also passed on info from the tower regarding those hung landing gears, etc. .
So I'm in this bread truck, with a bunch of staff sgt. and tech sgt. helicopter mechanics telling fart jokes and yakking it up, and Job Control calls in an F-111 incoming w/ a hung landing gear... "and oh btw guyz, it's a corker."
Dead silence. No moar fart jokes. I'm just a dumb-ass A1C 2-striper.

"It's got live nukes on board."
Fortunately, pilot got the gear down.

Look, I ain't talkin' HIroshima or Nagasaki. That thing coulda turned the state capitol in Sacramento [20 miles away] into Chernobyl.
Still pisses me off. You don't just overhaul a plane and then send it up w/ a live nuke on board. And people wonder how I got an honorable discharge.
Compared to the higher ranked f**kups, why the hell not?

Weren't there a few plane crashes with nukes loaded? I don't think they get off that easily. No reason to stop the fart jokes imo.

Tons of salt water do a much better job of shielding land-dwellers from radiation than open air. If a nuke-armed aircraft crashes on land, you'd be hard-pressed to cover it up nowadayz.

Can you please go to the drug + rehab stories/info, because there are some guys who are in desperate situation now (addiction(s), no/little money/income, homeless/transient or nearly) and need help.

If you have some info about help in Vegas, or some other advice/contacts from there...would like to share that with some people who urgently need it now.

-- places to stay/free/cheapest housing
-- free food, or some way to eat with almost no money
-- ID/documents (to be able to rent/stay most places this is being required it seems, and maybe to get most "official" help this is now needed?)
-- how to go from using stimulants/meth/etc. with almost nothing to getting back to a basic life
-- is detox needed? can someone go to a halfway house from being on the street? (some places say a TB test is needed, or..other restrictions?) example: WESTCARE
-- "anonymous" or 12-step programs or "clubs", what are pros/cons for those? can someone who is barely surviving make it with these places? (e.g. Serenity Club, Thai Club, )
-- if the money is out, or nearly so, how should the person get back, what steps, when they have also been on drugs?
-- for crystal meth, what info/advice would you have?
-- how can an "outsider" help? what things to be aware of?
-- how to deal with "authorities" when basically have no money, no ID, no job, from out-of-state, and have been using drugs/associating with drug users/dealers and probably hookers/prostitutes (also using/dealing probably)?
-- would you recommend a person in this situation to stay in the same neighborhood/city and try to "stabilize" with local help, or better to "get out" somewhere else to try to get things back together?
-- how to handle transportation/logistics problems of getting around the different offices/services/agencies, or for getting out of town/going somewhere else?
-- what other resources, like houses/services/clubs/agencies or other help would you recommend checking in Vegas for someone in this situation?

Vets in Australia have the same issues as this. Such a disgrace. Maybe us well adjusted members of 4L need to see if we can setup some sort of international organisation which is a 1 stop shop for all the help they need.
