I do not see anywhere on Google where Jerry Rice, mark mcgwire, or steve yzerman announced they were gay. If it were, Im sure we would have heard about it by now.

Hello friends,

I am not sure I quite understand what the term "gimmick" means in the way you are using it. Can you inform me?

Solid profiling. I guess people in theater are not as accepting of others because they generally are not around people different to them?

Can you please stop being so close minded and treat everyone equally. It's upsetting me.

Hello fidstar-poker,

A thousand apologies for my "profiling" but I think we all suspect that it's true to some degree. Have you heard of Michael Sam? Sam was the best football player in the SEC (Southeastern Conference) he is also gay. You would think Sam would be one of the first players "drafted" by a NFL team since Sam was the best player in what is regarded as the best football conference? However, Sam was drafted 249th and has not played a single play in the NFL regular season.

Have you heard of Jason Collins? Collins played for years in the NBA and finally came out as a homosexual a few years ago. Collins has only played 22 games since then and only started 1.

I know **** all about football, so I won't comment there.

But I know basketball really well.

Jason Collins was on his way out of the league when he made his announcement. In the season before he came out he played 38 games (out of 82) and averaged 1.1 points per game. He was also 33 (which is old in basketball terms) when he made the announcement. He was done as a basketball player.

There is actually a more likely scenario that he only played another game in the NBA because he announced that he was gay. The NBA (more specifically the team Brooklyn) wanted to show support for the LGBT community. Dude got applauded when he played his first game.

ffs they took the All-Star game away from the Hornets because of the state overturning the bathroom thing.

But don't let facts get in the way of your agenda.

If you want people to treat you without judging, maybe you should do the same and stop playing the victim.

So there's a player who i no longer playing basketball, but it was only because of his age, not his sexuality, and everything is ok? We are still at zero known LGBT players in the NBA.

The NBA just did what what any normal organization that cares about human rights would do with the Charlotte thing. They had no choice, they had to move the All-Star Game. Playing that game in Charlotte would have been a PR nightmare.

I did spend a little time in one of the politics community a while back. However I do not remember which one, both of them seem mostly the same. I discussed the election and opened a thread with a proposal regarding how senators are selected.

This sentence makes as much sense as you.

Who cares. It's fairly irrelevant. There's like a bajillion openly gay players in the WNBA. There was over 50 openly gay athletes at the last Olympics. Seriously it doesn't matter. All I care (and 90% of sports people care about) is if they can play basketball. If Steph Curry came out and said he was gay. Who cares. Good for him. Now go and play ****ing basketball.

Of course they had a choice. There would have been zero PR issues if they had left it there. But the NBA decided to make a stand (which is good) about the issue.

Thank you friends for your wise council. Given the answers this produced and the sometimes heated debate this conversation generated, perhaps I should open a thread in the Sporting Events community expressing my concerns over LGBT issues? That seems like an appropriate location for such a conversation and could educate some people who are not aware of the LGBT issues in this country.
