I personally don't personally use progressive _________ as a genre name, but as an adjective to simply how the track is built:
Quote:
Today, the term "progressive" in dance music has come to refer to the structure of a track with more gradual changes
As opposed to a few sudden changes in the track, from one repetitive loop to another repetitive loop. Or worse yet, no changes at all.
Quote:
Most electronic dance music tracks released today contain features that are relatively easy for DJs to beatmatch records together, partly for that reason. Unlike the song structures of genres like hard house or Hi-NRG, the peaks and troughs in a progressive dance track tend to be more complex. Layering different sounds on top of each other and slowly bringing them in and out is key to the progressive movement.
It is somewhat synonomous to "varied", "complex", "intelligent".
Essentially, I consider progressive the

And there have been a million viewers and the track is rated 5 stars.
I believe after being reminded that such monstrosities exist in this world you will agree there is a
desperate need for a word that would separate real music from such abomination. I would never dare to say that I listen to trance, if this is brain-barf of a sick monkey is also considered trance. It seems that many people have begun to use "progressive" as such a word, to seperate the soup from the vomit, the jelly from the slime, the nuggets of chocolate from the nuggets of poo.
I guess my use of the word might be debatable, though I don't think it's limited to just me. As per OP (who also seems to consider it more important wether or not the track is progressive, than wether it is house or trance or etc).
The genres you mentioned that you consider superior to progressive trance, I would probably define also as progressive trance themselves.
For illustration,
here's a track that is neither house, trance, nor any specific genre really, but is progressive. You can
tell it's progressive. It smells of progression. I am sure OP will like this more than most all non-progressive trance, non-progressive house and non-progressive etc. Because it's progressive, and that's the most important thing.
