Last year, I gave you a TR on going to see The Cult in concert.
Well, this past Friday, I took my gal to see Duran Duran at the Joint in Vegas.
Back in the early 80s when they first came out, I thought Duran Duran was a pretty-boy, MTV-created waste of space type of band. I was a rock guy. Hated them! But oddly, the older I got, the more I appreciated their song-craft, musicianship and hook-laden ditties. A few months ago, I actually downloaded their new CD,
All You Need is Now, and it rocks.
So, for my gal's b-day, I took her to the show.
The opening act was Neon Trees, and boy that band was good. The lead singer was like the bastard love child of Freddie Mercury and Perry Farrell. I hadn't heard any song of theirs except their hit, "Animals," but I still liked the rest of their set. Although, when the lead singer announced he had been born in 1984, I flipped him my middle finger.
Duran Duran takes the stage! Damn, these guys still look good. The women - young and old - went nuts.
Four of the five original members are still with the band: Simon LeBon, Roger Taylor, John Taylor, and Nick Rhodes. Apparently, Andy Taylor left the band for good a few years ago. In his place, the band had on stage a new lead guitarist, a back-up singer, and a percussionist to help Roger out with all of those cool 80s island beats.
This band was TIGHT. Every single song was just about perfect. They played about 5 or 6 new songs that were awesome and got a great response, and the rest were their old hits. Oddly, they didn't play much off of their seminal album,
Rio But the only song I really missed that they didn't play was
Girls on Film, off of their first album. Also, I would've liked to hear a song or two from their album,
Big Thing.
But their set spanned their career:
BEFORE THE RAIN
PLANET EARTH
ALL YOU NEED IS NOW
A VIEW TO A KILL
BLAME THE MACHINES
COME UNDONE
SAFE
REFLEX
GIRL PANIC
TIGER TIGER
CARELESS MEMORIES
LEAVE A LIGHT ON
ORDINARY WORLD
NOTORIOUS
HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF
SUNRISE
(encore)
WILD BOYS
RIO
Above the stage, there were these four head shaped things that would have projections of pre-taped video of the faces of the four main band members singing back-up to the songs. It was this weird, 3-D looking thing that was really cool.
The set wasn't long, but damn, it ****ing rocked. I don't care what anyone says, this was and has always been, a helluva band. Great time.
