light and dark khaki is fine, not too baggy or too tight..any kind of plaid short will make you look like a douche.

k ty, yeah was probably just going to get some plain ole khaki shorts, probably light (i wear black shoes, is this a correct combo?) with no-show or no socks. also i'm tall and thin fwiw.

yeah let me rephrase to "casual" - if i'm going out to anywhere on the nicer end of the spectrum i'll wear my nice jeans. these would be shorts for like house parties or non-fancy bars and restaurants... something nicer than gym shorts that will be comfortable for when it's mad hot out

imo, tall thin guys look better with shorts a little past the knee and stockier guys usually look better with the shorts hitting at or above the knee, but everyone is different...I guess I watch a lot of "What Not To Wear"

the picture above is definately a plaid, it's usually any fabric woven with multiple colored yarns (usually obnoxious colors) in a crossbarred (#) pattern.

shoe color, brown works best I think...but black and white can work as well

It is hard to be a tall guy and get shorts that go past the knee =[
