Put some lights near the car on the upride (oprit) who automatically turn on when someone passes them (i have it, it's cheap). Now just put a webcam and tape it , the recording will be clear.
I'm pretty sure you can get cheap security cam's that operate in the dark, I'm in Oz so this may be cheaper/more expensive for you. They have little IR LED's that sit around the camera and emit IR light (they look faintly red). Don't put it anywhere it will be seen too easily or the red glow will give them away
sitting in a car all night takes to much time, i think camera is the only solution. you might also try a private investigator, that might be cheaper than getting the equipment yourself.
