300mil km long stick, would the other end really move at the same time ?

My physics knowledge is only high school level, but I would imagine that if you push one end then that push would travel like a shockwave through the stick and the other end wouldn't move instantly but when that shockwave reaches the other end ?

I super suck @ physics tho

lol newb

there are no shockwaves in physics. They're not even real! You ever see Sylvia Brown? Nooooo way those frauds are causing shock waves

He's right, you know. Plus the stick would have way to much inertia to move easily. Even if the stick was made of an aerogel with a density of a mere 1.9 mg/cm^3, a stick 300,000,000 km long the width of a mere toothpick would have a mass of around 6000 kg, far too heavy for a human to move around with any convenience.

Physics is an attractive 23 yr old female who reads BBV4L regularly. Well that's what she said anyway. So i wouldn't feel comfortable trolling her. She did post a pic and i think when i saw that i felt it move.

that would be a really heavy stick

just look at the stick as a long string of atoms/molecules because, well, that's just what it is. so you're kinda right about a "shockwave". each atom/molecule has to touch the other one from earth to mars -that's a very long chainreaction- and atoms don't move faster than the speed of light.

The mirror-in-space thing is awesome-o!

It's funny when the people of BBV4L try to pretend like they are smart by telling how a bunch of made up cartoons will not work in real life.

Because it seems to genuinely interest you...

where F is the force in newtons and μ the linear density.

I'm dumb

nvm I found it, pretty complex ****

Last edited by LovedBySgtSaLT; 10-16-2010 at 07:06 PM. Reason: does the waterentering actually need more force than the upfloating floaters create? I'm lost -that cant be right

the weight of the water would not let the floater in

HAH! Atoms don't really 'touch' each other!

Spoiler:
i smart too
