the difference is it's assumed that the people are rational and know they have to kill the lion to survive

lions are not rational, they are animals

in the times of the romans they had to specially train and torment lions to get them to attack humans in the colosseum. they don't just instinctively attack large groups of humans.

This is the assumption the thread needs to be based on. If you're dealing with the OP's restrictions this fight is taking place in an enclosed area, and I think even a wild lion would realize it cant escape. Any animal once it realizes its cornered is going to go ****ing ape ****. I think if you say the animal is special trained to be a fighting lion you're going to need a lot more people than 20.

Its like fighting a guy on a horse. Sure you can stand there and trade swords swings with and your at a huge disadvantage but if the guy on the horse is smart he'd never stop to fight you. He'd just ride you the **** over. If its a trained lion you dont train it to stop and fight you. You train it to just ride you the **** over and swing its claws as it goes through.

The basic argument for your idea is that 20 healthy people can tackle a healthy lion. Because you're not going to get more than maybe 2 tries and then you have have at least a handful of either mauled men, or people fighting much this than 100%. Men will also tire a lot quicker than a lion.

I don't know how many people it would take but my strategy would be to have the group of guys, and say there are 15 guys, the group kills 3 of their own. Doing this, you can dismember the bodies, and everyone gets an arm or a leg from the dead men to use as a club. [3 dead x 4 limbs per = 12 clubs yo (BlAHHH *like the count from sesame street)]. Then I think you could use the torso's as bait, and the heads as flying projectiles. Or you could even use the torso's as like a shield. I think it could work.

-20 men advance in a tight formation, assign 1-2 men to solely help out the wounded. this would bolster morale and confidence and stop the spread of panic, as people would attack the lion believing they will be pulled out if wounded

- when the lion is cornered, charge it headon but have the majority of the people drift around to attack its sides. punches and kicks should be focused on its lower abdomen and knees. the remaining few people attacking it headon should try to avoid getting bitten/clawed to buy time for the guys to actually inflict internal injuries and take out its mobility. if they get a chance they should try to gouge it using any sticks or long objects they can find or their fingers.

the guys attacking it head on will incur the majority of the pain and a couple will definitely get seriously injured, maybe even die. by then though, the lion would be in severely injured and once it is down it will be overcome within seconds by kicks and punches.

Why would a lion allow this to happen? Even if it wont attack its going to keep moving and not back into a corner. The faster the people move the less effectively they stay firmly together.

firstly we never assumed the animal was trained. how many trained fighting lions are there? none.

if you want to assume that the lions are trained to be especially savage and accustomed to hunting/killing humans, then I'd probably need more than 20, but not many.

If you are assuming a regular lion out of africa though, 20 is fine.

and as for your point about being cornered, this isn't necessarily that true. i'm not assuming it's a small space. if it's in a tiny room, then yea, the lion will probably attack. but if it's a large area, the lion will most likely stay away and not even approach the men. if the men approach it, it will obviously defend itself, but why would they?

well as i said in my previous post a lion isn't going to approach a group of 20 men.

and if the men decide to go kill the lion for whatever reason and form up into a tight and intimidating formation, the lion will probably just walk away from them. by doing this the men could at least back it against some kind of wall before attacking
