She's way more than 230. People always under-estimate how much really fat people weigh. I used to work with a guy who was 5'6" and 296 and he was of a relatively similar build. She looks shorter than that so knock some pounds off for that but yeah she's surpassed 230. Easily.

I bet it's been 4 years running that this girl has gone to a Halloween costume party and at least one person said "That's an amazing Michelin man get-up you got there".

There used to be a website where people posted an image along with their height and weight so you could see what various sized people looked like.

Dcifr, I cannot believe that girl ballooned. And same thing I bet she's over 170. What I find most crazy about it all is I SWEAR you posted that pic of her standing in the bus years ago (I've been on 2p2 since 2004), and I remember it. And I remember thinking "damn, she's FINE." Now it's like "Damn, she's FINished." So sad.

Women weigh less than men though, but you're right, I probably shaved off too many pounds.

Ok, then I'll put her at... 260. Heh.

The ultimate guide...
HOW TO TELL IF YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER WILL GET FAT
Spoiler:

Look at their personality...(psychologically, future)

Quote:
The National Institute on Aging did some very interesting analysis on a group of people they have been following for 50 years and tied a few key personality traits to measurements of adiposity: BMI score, waist size, body fat and hip size. They found some interesting, if not unexpected, correlations: impulsive and extroverted people tend to be fatter; and conscientious, disciplined, organized people tend to be skinnier. This makes sense because people who are impulsive tend to eat more, as do social butterflies since so many social events are based around eating and drinking. Disciplined people however, will have either the will power or coping mechanisms in place to navigate their daily life without over-indulging in calories or exercising enough. Note however, that the two sides aren’t mutually exclusive: disciplined people can be extroverted, and vice-versa.

The traits were taken from the Five Factor Model in psychology, which describes human personality by scoring subjects on each of five areas. From Wikipedia:

Openness – (inventive/curious vs. consistent/cautious). Appreciation for art, emotion, adventure, unusual ideas, curiosity, and variety of experience.
Conscientiousness – (efficient/organized vs. easy-going/careless). A tendency to show self-discipline, act dutifully, and aim for achievement; planned rather than spontaneous behaviour.
Extraversion – (outgoing/energetic vs. solitary/reserved). Energy, positive emotions, surgency, and the tendency to seek stimulation in the company of others.
Agreeableness – (friendly/compassionate vs. cold/unkind). A tendency to be compassionate and cooperative rather than suspicious and antagonistic towards others.
Neuroticism – (sensitive/nervous vs. secure/confident). A tendency to experience unpleasant emotions easily, such as anger, anxiety, depression, or vulnerability.

What the researchers found was that people who scored high on the Neuroticism and Extraversion traits were fatter, and people who scored high on the Conscientiousness trait were skinnier. They went a little deeper though and made finer measurements of ‘facets’ in each of the five main personality traits, which gave them even more insight. These facets are more practical concepts to grasp, so here are the ones that had significant correlation to higher body fat — 0 means no correlation, 1 means complete correlation:

0.26 – Impulsiveness, the only facet of Neuroticism that was significant
0.13 – Warmth, part of Extraversion
0.12 – Assertiveness, part of Extraversion
0.07 – Positive Emotions, part of Extraversion
0.06 – Gregariousness, part of Extraversion
0.05 – Competence, part of Conscientiousness
0.05 – Excitement-seeking, part of Extraversion

And the facets that had significant correlation to lower body fat, meaning a negative correlation higher body fat:

0.12 – Order, part of Conscientiousness
0.10 – Self-discipline, part of Conscientiousness
0.09 – Straightforwardness, part of Agreeableness
0.08 – Activity, part of Extraversion
0.07 – Modesty, part of Agreeableness
0.05 – Deliberation, part of Conscientiousness
0.05 – Altruism, part of Agreeableness
Look at their friends...(socially, present)

Obesity can spread from person to person, much like a virus, according to researchers. When one person gains weight, close friends tend to gain weight too.

Their study, published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine, involved a detailed analysis of a large social network of 12,067 people who had been closely followed for 32 years, from 1971 until 2003. The investigators knew who was friends with whom, as well as who was a spouse or sibling or neighbor, and they knew how much each person weighed at various times over three decades.

That let them watch what happened over the years as people became obese. Did their friends also become obese? Did family members? Or neighbors?

The answer, the researchers report, was that people were most likely to become obese when a friend became obese. That increased one's chances of becoming obese by 57 percent.

There was no effect when a neighbor gained or lost weight, however, and family members had less of an influence than friends. It did not even matter if the friend was hundreds of miles away - the influence remained. And the greatest influence of all was between mutual close friends. There, if one became obese, the other had a 171 percent increased chance of becoming obese too.

The same effect seemed to occur for weight loss, the investigators say, but since most people were gaining, not losing, over the 32 years, the result was an obesity epidemic.

Dr. Nicholas Christakis, a physician and professor of medical sociology at Harvard Medical School and a principal investigator in the new study, says one explanation is that friends affect each others' perception of fatness. When a close friend becomes obese, obesity may not look so bad.

"You change your idea of what is an acceptable body type by looking at the people around you," Christakis said.

The investigators say their findings can help explain why Americans became fatter in recent years: Persons who became obese were likely to drag some friends with them.

[...]

[...]

[...]

If the new research is correct, it might mean that something in the environment seeded what many call an obesity epidemic, making a few people gain weight. Then social networks let the obesity spread rapidly.

It also might mean that the way to avoid becoming fat is to avoid having fat friends.

That is not the message they meant to convey, say the study investigators, Christakis and his colleague James Fowler, an associate professor of political science at the University of California in San Diego. You don't want to lose a friend who becomes obese, Christakis said. Friends are good for your overall health, he explains.

So why not make friends with a thin person, he suggests, and let the thin person's behavior influence you and your obese friend?
Look at the family history...(genetics, past)

Quote:
You are what you eat, but does your diet affect your children’s health? About ten years ago, Bygren and colleagues studied a cohort of individuals born in 1905 in the Överkalix parish in northernmost Sweden, where annual harvests are heavily impacted by the weather.1 County records provided birth and death dates for the 1905 cohort, their parents and their grandparents. Additional records indicated years of poor, moderate, or superior availability of crop food during the preceding century. Was the lifespan of the individuals born in 1905 affected by the nutritional experience of their predecessors? To focus this question, the authors hypothesized that, in order for famine or food surplus to have persistent effects, the dietary impact must occur in a sexually formative period. Interestingly, they found a significant correlation between food availability for paternal grandfathers when they were 9-12 years old and the survival of their grandchildren. Perhaps more remarkably, grandchild lifespan shortened if there was an excess of food for the paternal grandfather and increased if the grandfather experienced famine during this critical developmental stage. The effect was not trivial: the difference in survival for grandchildren averaged 32 years!

A follow-up study by the same group expanded the study to include cohorts from 1890, 1905, and 1920 and examined cause of death data.2 They reported that a father experiencing famine during the critical 9-12 years of age passed protection against cardiovascular disease to his children. To restate: famine for the father meant less cardiovascular disease for his children. No significant correlations were found for mothers, grandmothers, or grandparents and offspring cardiovascular disease. These correlative studies anticipated a decade of studies into the now popular concept that the diet of the mother might reprogram the genes of the fetus, without mutation, leading to persistent effects in health and development of the child.3
I have more stuff on why we get fat and why we're attracted to what we're attracted to but that's another post, anyways...

CLIFF NOTES:

The person LESS likely to get fat would be someone who is:
  • Less impulsive than average
  • Less extroverted than average
  • More orderly/organized than average
  • More self-disciplined than average
  • More conscientious than average
  • Has skinny friends (surprisingly look at the best friend instead of her mom unless her mom is her best friend)
  • Has a skinny family lineage (a grandfather during famine would be skinny ofc)

So someone who is MORE likely to get fat would:
  • Do things without any thought
  • Always wants to hit the bars (needs constant stimulation)
  • Very messy both physically and mentally (lack of planning)
  • Can't resist a plate of donuts set in front of them
  • Too lazy to workout or care about anything other than finding more stimulation
  • Has a best friend who is obese and most of their friends are overweight
  • Has an overweight family lineage

The most obvious thing is if being skinny/looking good is truly important to them then they will maintain it!

And then there are the things you can't control such as an unexpected illness, medications? etc. that you just have to let live.

So will she get fat? Look at her past, present, future. Look at who she is, who she hangs around with, and where she comes from.

Closing Remarks:

Some other random things...the more fat you gain, the harder it becomes to lose it, physiologically speaking; as they say prevention is the best cure so start when you're skinny rather than when you're already fat which ironically my anecdotal evidence suggests it's the skinny people who don't workout...Obesity is due to a diminished activity of the sympathetic nervous system, and weight regulation and food craving/addiction are closely related to the pleasure circuit in the brain (studies available) - that's a very complicated topic...

Ultimately, food is a double-edged sword - it both nourishes us and kills us at the same time . Think of food as a stressor the same way exercise is or your kids are so essentially constant eating = constant stress on the body. There are solutions to this but that's another topic. Also, I've been reading that diabetes (aka lowered insulin sensitivity) is the body's (pancrea's) way of protecting itself...though more research is needed. Tieing this to evolution, we're not designed to be eating every couple hours...which is why obesity and diabetes is a more modern problem compared to the past where the few wealthy elite were fat and the poor masses starved.
