Tell your stories of the worst bosses you've ever encountered and the crazy **** they did or made you do. I'll post some stories later to get ball rolling.

For starters:
So I was thinking I might put down the phone and clean my office today.

But, my boss has given me the task of making 5 more reports like yesterday. I'm kinda excited to actually have work to do and be busy for the week.

I had to tell her that there was no way the report would be done by 2 yesterday and she goes back and emails saying it will be done at 4 (eyeroll). She has been receiving/sending emails about these reports for 3weeks, not copying me, not asking me how long they will take, and giving them to me litterally an hour before she promised them. You guys won't believe this (whatever), but I hate hate hate to send out anything with my name on with mistakes; yesterday I sent the report to two of our senior engineers to review my numbers and formulas because the work was rushed. She got mad and said I should have sent it to her (she can't review the numbers/math/anything); she was mad because she wanted everyone to think she had done the work. I politely told her that I am happy to do whatever work needs to be done, but I need to be included on all correspondences and I could have had this work done last week. Am I being paranoid that she is trying to hide my efforts or anything I do? It's like when I had the great idea that was rolled out company wide and she claims it was her idea and she told me to do it and makes my partner the ambassador for it and sends him to all of the planning/rollout meetings. No big deal on that one; her boss+his boss came into the picture, made me the embassador and gave me a raise.
Should I just be like "**** it", do work, come up with new things and just roll with it and let her put her name on everything or how should this be handled? Wait till there is a meeting and let her expose herself by not knowing what's going on?
Is this normal and I've just never encountered a boss like this before? Like this is how it usually works?

This might not make sense unless you've seen my HF log

My current boss is a real jerk. Half the time when I want the day off he makes me work. He pays me **** money and I can't even ask for a raise.

Sometimes I want to punch him in his stupid face, but I'm scared of hurting myself.

What exactly do you mean by trashed the apartment? Why type of job was this? Was he on drugs?

One of my boss's boss use to victimize me a lot. Singled me out in bad spots in front of everyone when he shouldn't have.

My boss said that he was worried I'd quit, sue and get a 12 month payout or something. He thought I would have deserved it.

But the fact is I can be abrasive as ****. So, we constantly butted heads, as he was also head strong. And I'm not a yes man (and he surrounded himself with yes men). So, I constantly told my boss's boss what I thought of certain things and he didn't like it.

I also know the fact I'm not a yes man has done me a lot more good than bad. Every job I've ever had, if my boss leaves, they always call me and offer me a job at their new place. One of the main reasons is because of my attitude and how I go about things.

In the end I didn't quit. My boss's boss basically said (not to me, because he would never admit it in person), that he knew I knew my stuff and that I could get results for the company. So we just stayed clear of each other.

He ended up quitting several months later.

Nah. I only saw him once a week. Not sure what would have happened if we were constantly working together thou

MLYLT this will probably come off as sexist heck it probably is but I'd hate to be a women reporting to a women boss particularly in a technical environment. I also work in an engineering company and what you described seems to be the same story I've heard from other women in my workplace in with women bosses. It seems like instead of supporting each other there out tovundermine there employees.

Three thoughts:

1. Women in male dominated fields probably have to be a little more cut-throat to get ahead.

2. Employees under women are definitely more inclined to see something wrong with women being authoritative. The whole "man is strong leader/woman is bossy or bitchy" thing.

3. I bet the undermining goes both ways.

Certainly! A boss's man has not less flaws than a boss's woman and vice versa. Here the main role is played by the leader's inward character.

My current boss, whose office is next to mine, sent me a letter to inform me that I would have a new officemate.

Women are really cut throat. I think that added with the fact that she has never worked in a technical environment ,never managed technical people , has no respect from the other groups(all other managers are engineers), and her decisions are constantly overturned by the other managers is the problem. She has been a manager (not here) for many years, but she has always managed general factory workers. I don't think you should treat any person different based on their role, but there are different ways that you approach different people with different skills. Sometimes I feel like she acts like a fast food boss or something, and a lot of the time she gives my partner and I task to do that really aren't engineering work, but more of what you would have someone making minimum wage to do. She tried to get he and I to do something that would have taken half a day everyday to do and we were both like , "umm, thats a waist of time and our skills " She has a habit of talking to people like they are stupid as well which I called her out on.

Eep, you called out your boss?!?!?

In non-boss situations I occasionally respond to rude requests with a calm smile and "Now, how would you phrase that if you were speaking to someone with dignity and self respect?"

The reactions are pretty fun.

That's a good response!

I did it professionally and because Im lack good communication, I ran by what I would say to a couple of other people first for feedback.
