It would be a ton in Memphis. It would be the equivalent of 400k/job in Memphis. Guess that isnt' much to you. But here in Memphis, in a good part of town you can get 5000+ square feet house for like 500-600k.

Also, I did not particularly care for the people I interviewed with. I did not particularly care for the employees I met. I can bring in some of my own team, but would not feel right dragging some of the people I trust and like working with into this environment.

I just don't know that I can pass up that much money (closer to $250k with bonuses).

Currently make a good living, but nothing close to that. Though I do think my current company is headed towards busto within a year, so I do need to consider all offers. I could well be unemployed any day now.

I just know I will be hating life if I take this job. Also, have a 1-year old daughter, and this would mean much less time with her.

I also know I'll be hating life if I have no job next month.

I think I am going to pass on it. I have till Monday to give them a decision.

I am an idiot.

Why do people always think that money = happiness? If you think you are going to be miserable why are you even considering the job?

250k goes pretty far in Memphis. You aren't ridiculously rich, but it's still a pretty significant amount of money for the town. Easily in the top 1% around here.

My guess was DC or LA, after reading your life descriptions.

I hopped jobs for 10 years after college b/c none of them inspired me. Finally I found one that made me happy to wake up every morning and I've been there 14 years.
What did you end up doing, and what did you try on the way?

This is relatively straightforward, if a person lives a miserable life being poor, they think being rich will make them happy. It is a logic fallacy, they believe since p implies q, q also implies p which is not true.

IE. If it rains, the ground will be wet. If the ground is wet, it rained. The first is true but the second is clearly false because there are many reasons why the ground could be wet.

I'm sure it's expensive where you live, but let me start by telling you I hate you.

Grunching a bit here, I say bite the bullet for some predetermined amount of time (2 years?), live as if you're still making your old salary (or less) and invest every extra penny you make. You should have a nice nest egg at the end that you can either borrow from or pay off the mortgage with (if you think that's a good investment) while you do work that you love. Who knows, maybe there'll even be legal poker in the US by then!

Just don't deviate from the plan, like using the extra $$$ to buy stupid crap, or keep deciding to stay at the job "one more year" until you wake up one morning realizing you're now old and bitter and your kids are moving out and you barely know them.

DON'T DO IT.
Believe me the only thing you would ever regret by not taking the job is a few bucks you never will miss.

the kid of yours...you WILL regret missing out the hours lost you will NEVER get back.
I have been commuting 1.75 hours each way, sitting in a fricking cube for 30 years.
Both kids are grown and now have grandkids that I cant spend time with. The times I do have with them I am so worn out I am in Zombieland... my daughter calls me one of the POD people.

the fact that you weren't fistpumping after the job offer should tell you something...

i had a similar conversation with my dad a while back:

"son, you're supposed to be a man now. you were born with balls. that means, when the decisions you make can and will effect the current and future status of your family and possibly the generations to follow, you have to make the decision that might not be the easiest, most ideal, perfect world scenario for everyone involve for the betterment of the future."

my dad cross trained as a hazardous cargo hauler and spent a lot of time gone when i was young, just to provide a better life for my mom, sister, and i. sure, when i was young and everything seemed so easy, i resented him for not being around for some things. but as i got older and saw he was making the tough decision and going to miss out on a lot of our growing up, in an effort to provide a better, easier path than he had, and my grandparents had. it was probably harder on him not being there, than it was on us not having him around.

later on in life, the kids will realize what you did. the sacrifice you made to try to make their life better and more secure.

my advice would be to suffer through it for at least 4-5 years. get the time on the resume and try to make it work. earn the $200k and live like you're making $80k. get your home in order, put away for your child's future, better your family. the job may work out to be great or it may open the door to the perfect job that provides the security without the compromise.

if my dad hadn't made his choices, i probably wouldn't be where i am today. 30 years old, VP at a stable company in a field i love, earning $200k/yr (more than my mother and dad combined)

I do not want to hijack...maybe I will start a thread next week.
OP you make enough between you and your wife (she sounds like a keeper for sure) to start a college fund got for your kids.
Nothing wrong with grinding out life like the previous poster's dad, god bless him! I just think that if I had been a little bit less concerned with chasing dollars we all might have had happier lives.
OP sounds like you have an artistic side... any possibility you could start your own firm? Freelance from home?

For the love of god take it, worst case scenario you put a couple hundred in the bank PER YEAR for a couple of years and move on.

Do it for all of us who can't.

you're already letting some stranger at a daycare raise your 1 year old daughter most of the time, you not being around a few extra hours each day isn't going to make much of a difference at all.
