i say take the job and live through as many years of it as possible. then you can lead a comfortable lifestyle and spend plenty of time with your family and pursue other hobbies. i think temporarily sacrificing your happiness to build a promising future for your family is the correct decision

Why did you interview for the job and waste their time if you don't even want it? Didn't you think about any of that crap you mention in OP ahead of time? Now when you turn it down you'll look like a dickbag & they'll never give you another chance w/that company again.

If you want to potentially play poker and write, you have the potential to make that possible via a short (<5 years) in this position. You would be able to fund your daughter's education, pay off the house, purchase a real car, and, assuming you continue living within your current means, you appear to be having a pretty nice BR.

The EV of this decision, both financially and with consideration as to your overall happiness, seems to be +++ in the long run. It may just take some time after leaving the position for your run good to catch up with the guaranteed 5 year downswing.

This is not only harshly critical, but simply wrong. An interview is not simply your chance to be hired; it is also the opportunity for an employer to hire you. An interview, if conducted appropriately, is in no way one-sided; either party is expected to evaluate the relationship and make decisions based upon the way the interview goes if they wish to pursue said relationship (which OP is doing).

You never know for sure, but if someone is dangling $250k in front of him there are probably other opportunities out there that are more than sufficient to meet the basic needs of his daughter.

The much more valuable provision is his time and presence.

What doe that come out at per month after taxes?

Also i say take it, think of the kids in Africa who walk 15 miles a day for a half a liter of clean water and with that they have to drink and bath.

Think of the children!

Buy or rent a new place closer to the job, save ~100k of the money a year and invest. Work at the job for 2-3 years then move on to something else. After you find a new job keep expanding your nest egg/put a big down payment on a house/start and finish your child's college fund etc. Milk this opportunity for all it's worth for your future. Just don't become married to the money or there's no way you'll be able to take a 6 figure pay cut to do something you enjoy.

Also hopefully you keep saving and never have to take financing to purchase a car again. Cash for assets is winning

Man this is such a non-issue

For 250k a year, you can afford a driver in an SUV or town car. You can watch movies on the way to work, play poker, sleep (this is big), whatever you want. Same driver can run errands for you to cut down the things you need to do.

As soon as you can sell the house, you sell the house. You find a place that makes the commute less insane for you, and increase the commute a bit for your wife (but not a ton obviously).

Work crap job 3 years during what is going to be an awful globally economy. When global economy is less ****, you can be more selfish and do something you love.

Man easy game.

Does this job allow for flex hours?? Arrive early leave early due to commutes? I have friends that bought 1-2 hours outside of Vancouver to get a bigger house and most have jobs that have allowed for 5-6am starts leaving early afternoon.

Don't pass up the $$ I realize it may not be the best enviroment but suck it up for couple of years and save.

Thanks all for advice. I posted this thing while drinking a bit expecting/wanting to get flamed. I didn't expect real advice!

I've flipped again and now leaning towards taking it, and believe it or not 2p2 is affecting my decision a bit. I still need more time to think it over, and will probably vacillate another 50 times between now and then. It's such a marginal decision on something that will have a far than marginal impact on my life. I appreciate the advice. 2p2 never fails to surprise.

To answer some questions: I currently make around $150k/yr (with bonuses). Wife makes about $95k. We aren't hurting by any means. Live a comfortable life, have a savings, putting away for our daughter, etc. Poker was giving me an additional $40-70k per year, but I have to assume that is dried up, so really my quality of life will probably stay somewhat status quo, even though it is a huge bump in salary.

Moving is an option, and would have to be considered, but my wife specifically left her job to go to this new place that is close to home and has an awesome daycare. My daughter spending less time in a car is more important to me than me spending less time in a car.

As to why I interviewed, colleague/friend who worked at the company recommended me. I actually blew them off for a month, but they persisted. I went in figuring "what the hell...if they blow me away with an offer than maybe." They asked what my demands were. I said something I thought was a bit ridiculous. They said no problem, when can you start?

I work in marketing, but not on the commercial side anymore. It is mind numbingly dull. Started as a copywriter. Loved that. Eventually pushed towards management, and I hate it, but it pays the bills. When I took my first management role, I said it would be temporary, and would go back to what I love after a few years. You can see why I am reluctant to make the same "mistake?" again. I am a middle-leaning liberal wussbag who has hippie ideals and hates everything about a cubical environment and vowed that would not be me. I have little respect for the people I work for, but fear I am starting to become one of them.

I have not written for myself (outside of trololoolololoing) in about 5 years. I have 3 unfinished books. They will all be best sellers one day, and Michael Bay will produce (but not direct) the feature movies. I will be arrested one day for snorting coke off of a supermodel's inner thigh, and my wife will understand. She will be disappointed but she will understand. In the end, the experience will bring me closer to Robert Downy Jr., and it will result in a collab that will win us both Oscars. SrslySirius will direct the film, but will not be nominated for an award. We will exchange harsh words because of it and it will sever the tenuous hold on our friendship that existed since the early days of shooting the film. I will be upset but will be able to buy new friends. He will fade into obscurity and eventually kill a hooker and go to jail, where he will be raped often. No one will remember him, except as the guy who directed that KingFish/RDJ production all those years ago. I will not visit him in prison.

In addition to the Prius I have an Audi A6 and a Honda Pilot. We need 4WD where we live, which is why 2 people have 3 cars (I wanted to sell Pilot but wife loves that car too much). I feel like a weenie when I drive the Prius, but it saves me about $20/day in gas.

Anything I left out?

OP- this is eerily similar to my position.
At the time (abt 1 yr ago)- 6 mo old daughter, wifey working, 300k underwater (F'in Florida). Offered new job couple hrs away making bank. The current job was pimp, shorts and flip flops every day, came and went with no regard. New job- corporate world (which I said I would never do again), suit every day, etc
Chose to short sell house and move. Best decision ever. Already received three raises, wife staying at home (which is what she wanted to do), life is good. We also loved our house, but trust me, new car, boat, letting the wife go shopping whenever she wants is worth its weight in gold. And the job doesnt suck nearly as bad as I thought. And Im even getting some pulling power now so hopefully I can change the way of thinking around here.
Sure our credit is crap for 5 yrs or so and were renting now. But hell, the market still hasnt bottomed out, and I just paid cash for a boat and my dream truck (pimped out 4x4 tundra lifted fwiw). Its pretty awesome going to a dealership, and when the financing part comes up, spitting out your a cash buyer is quite intoxicating.
By the time were ready to buy a home again, I will prob be able to pay all cash for it. Take the money!

What industry are you working in and what part of the job is so bad?

Sorry just realised its marketing.

I would bring friends/good colleagues into the business as it's their choice, and I'm sure they would love the money too!

The commute would be worth it each day as you have a job and you wont be busto like in your current situation. If you reject the offer and get made redundant shortly you will regret it big time. At least consider this offer for the short term as it is more secure for you and your family. I would take a shot at this if I was in your position. I hate commuting each day so live in London during the week and head home to see the girlfriend, friends and family at the weekends.

Take the job as a stepping stone. Keep looking, now with X% more salary for the next employer to match or beat.

Would going back to what you enjoy mean a substantial cut of income? Any chance of finding the best of both worlds?
