Also, I haven't given it back yet; I have a meeting at the Social Security Office on December 29th to arrange the return.

I tried to give it back earlier but it didn't go as planned.

Full Story:

I logged into mint.com in the morning and saw this amount in an old savings account I had a Wachovia, (now Wells Fargo). The old balance on this account was zero, so it jumped out at me. I saw the deposit was from the Treasury dept and called my CTO and told him that I would need to take the day off to sort this out. I made a few calls, found out it was the Social Security Dept that sent me the cash, and took a cab to their office in midtown. While I was on my way I called the SS admin on their 1-800 number, they pulled up my information, and the woman on the phone agreed that that money was probably not meant for me.

I took a number at the Social Security Office and waited... and waited.

6 hours later my number was called and I had to explain to the woman behind the glass what had happened. There is zero privacy in this office so everyone is hearing me complaining about receiving 17k. Everyone there was trying to get money and I was trying to give it back.

After explaining everything and her agreeing that this was a deposit in error she informed me I would need an appointment to really get it sorted out. She informed me that the soonest they had was the 29th (!). I was pissed as I took the day off of work to sort this out and now this just means this would cost me two days instead of one.

The real beat is that this money is taxable, and since it will be so close so to the end of the year (and more likely next year) until this gets finally sorted out I will be forced to pay takes on the 17.5k. She said I'll be receiving a 1099 in the mail in mid-January - which sucks, because I'll either have to file for an extension or do an amended return, which really tilts me.
