Ask an Old Guy What Life Was Like Before the Interwebz

When I was ten in 1973:
  • There was no internet
  • Heck, there were no computers
  • Calculators were the height of technology
  • Fax machines were science fiction fantasy
  • I had to stand next to a wall to talk on the phone, as said phone was connected to said wall via a short, twisty cord
  • No video games (no not even arcade games - we did have pinball machines, tho)
  • If I wanted to heat something up quickly, I would have to pre-heat the oven and wait half an hour or so. Microwave ovens did not exist.
  • No cable TV.
  • No TV remote - if I wanted to change one of the three black & white channels we got, I'd have to get up, cross the living room, and turn it by hand.
  • The only available naked girls were in Playboy magazine. Porn was not accessible by the masses.
  • Gas prices were about 48 cents a gallon.
  • No MP3s, no CDs, no DVDs, no VHS, no Blockbuster.
  • Vinyl was the only way to listen to music unless you were rich and you had a reel-to-reel. Even cassette tapes were rare.
  • If I wanted to watch a movie, I would've had to see it in the movie theater.

What was it like living in the depression?

Did you churn your own butter?

What was there to do in your free time? No internet, no cable, no DVDs? I don't think I could go back to talking to people...

No, Richard Nixon and Walter Cronkite did it for us.

You're assuming my family had such luxuries.

Did you ever get excited going to pick up relatives at the airport because your parents would give you a couple of nickes so you could play on the Pong game they had in the waiting lounge, and pong was like the most exciting thing ever?
